W.I.P. Pegaso Models - Ashigaru (1568 - 1600)
Posted by FingersEddie on Saturday, April 14, 2007 2:26 PM

I've started work by cleanin' up the parts on this figure, while I wait for a suitable base to complete my Sassanid.
This figure is a real beauty, with minimal clean up.
Armed with my references i'll certainly be usin' a different pallette of colours in comparison to the boxart. I do like the idea of the lacquered red hotoke-do (breastplate) and Jingasa (helmet), though.

Looking forward to seeing your colors on that fig.

Y'know Fingers, I was thinking about you the other day; I've been to 3 LHS and 2 model shows and have inquired about Mr. Dissolved Putty. I get the same expression every time: it's as if I just asked these people for a cannonball. I have seen it available on line, but no one in Austin knows what the Censored [censored] I'm talkin' about. Anyway- just thought about you and how you always advocate that stuff.

Have fun with the figure.

Laugh [(-D] Steve, d'you need some? I know a guy who has an online site here in the UK, and he orders all this stuff from Japan. Its Hiroboy, here's the link: http://www.hiroboy.com/catalog/

He's real fast in turnin' around your order, and totally reliable. He deals mainly in supplyin' detail parts, paints and accessories for 1/24 cars.

As for the stuff itself, another advantage to usin' it is that half the time you don't even need to sand it 'cos it self levels like paint.

Well, pretty sure I can get it through VLS, but thanks for the link. I could lose a day in that site. In the meantime, I thinned Squadron putty with laquer thinner. Works, but gets a good skin on it in about 45 seconds. Gotta work fast. Mr. Dissolved a little slower?

Here are some images of it all built up.

Everythin' fits perfectly! In regards to makin' sure the cowl rests perfectly over his food pouches, it is best to assemble the head, cowl and helmet to each other off the figure. There is a groove under the helmet to ensure a perfect line up and fit for the cowl. Then, fit this unit to the body, ensurin' that the cowl rests and sits snugly over the pouches. Don't worry about the neck area fittin' perfectly 'cos it will, it is very practical and can be twisted and turned in order to accommodate the above.

A small amount of Liquid Putty was used on this figure to unify everythin' together. Nonetheless, this figure builds up perfectly!

Here are some colours i've got reference of, and am considerin'. I gotta' bear in mind the fact that I like the idea of a red lacquered cuirass, and this won't work with some of these colours. Unlike a black one.

Fingers, I wanted to ask you. How did you do the chain mail for your other figures? You prime everything in auto black, then what do you do to the chain to make it look how it does?

PS: My vote is for the red and white from the box cover.

Hi Ron. The first coat of paint to be applied is a very dark mix of GW Boltgun Metal and Chaos Black. Then lighten this mix with more Boltgun Metal for an intermediate highlight coat, and then for the final highlight coat, use the Boltgun Metal straight from the pot.

Cheers, Paul.

I'm goin' with the Blue and Magenta colours as above, which will be Vallejo Flat Blue and Violet Red. I have very good references of Ashigaru wearin' these colours in this period. The primer i've used this time around is Vallejo Black Primer.

As for the red lacquered armour, the only forces wearin' this coloured armour were those of Li Naomasa at the battle of Sekigahara, who insisted on all his troops, includin' himself in wearin' this coloured armour.

Who's it produced by, Ron. There are a few by different companies, I believe. Is it Pegaso?!

I've made more progress on this. One thing to note is that there was no detailin' of the weave around the grip on the swords, so it needed to be painted in. Would have been real nice if there was. The helmet hasn't been shaded yet, 'cos i've still gotta' paint the mon.

That's some really beautiful painting there, Fingers. Selling this one, or going on your shelf? You mentioned a while back that you paint figures for a living, no?

Here is some more progress. I was gonna' paint the trousers a Dark Red or Dark Violet colour, but I don't think those colours would have worked, so I went with Vallejo Orange Brown.

To judge this I always paint a small figure on blank sheet of paper, and paint on him my wishlist of colours to see how they work.

I have the gaiters now painted in. I'm beginnin' to get really enthused about the prospect of paintin' the flesh in on this figure.

I've completed paintin' all flesh areas on the figure. All pictures were taken outdoors.

If you don't mind me asking - what scale is this?  I couldn't see anything on the box pic.  I'm curious, because I'm considering my first, serious figures.  I want to do a Roman viginette, and want to be able to get detail of what you have.  I know bigger is usually better for detail.  Also considering it to present to someone who's older, so too small may not be good ;-)

Thanks.

Cor, this figure is categorised as 54mm, but all 54mm figures measure in at around 65m to 70mm.

Cheers Cassibill. He ain't finished jus' yet, I still have the kamon badges to apply and then some satin varnish for his armour.

I have another figure that i've almost finished paintin'. I've been workin' on him whilst i've been waitin' for help with my Ashigaru's kamon badge.

Its a crusader, with the drawn blood of islamic infidels on his sword. Big Smile [:D]

That's the way it is with figures. You have so many little details to do even when it appears finished.  I've got the Verlinden Vietnam Tunnel Rat I've been working on forever and "Comrades" from C&C I just started.  I need to fix him. Some of the feet are hollow and the one I pegged, the foot snapped off.

The Crusader sounds interesting.
