54mm mounted knight - completed pics
Posted by jgeratic on Saturday, April 28, 2007 5:27 PM

This is a white metal kit of a European knight circa 1290 from El Viejo Dragon.  I choose the heraldry of Ferry de Chambley and built the model around this person(s) - a quick ancestry search on the net found a father(?- 1230)and son(?-1320) both bearing this name. So the final product is mostly conjecture as to how he might have appeared based on writings and images of other knights from this time period.
The following was added to the original kit:
-exchanged helmet with a spare one from Andrea's Templar banner holder
-built up torso 2mm as he looked short with new helmet
-ailette - right shoulder protection/heradry made from photo paper
-sword w/hand is Pegaso as is the scabbard
-brass reins from Nimix
-all markings (including pattern on surcoat) are homemade decals
-static grass on base
-wood base from Andrea

Excellent work, 'J'. Those decals really make a difference. Nice one.

Ditto the previous comments - nice build.

I really like the decal work.  Really clever idea!

Interesting technique you adopted here, and the result is very nice.
Maybe as a "brush-purist" I'd say you cheated a little but still it's a nice one.

Thanks everyone for stopping by and writing down your comments, I really do appreciate it.

I do feel somewhat sorry for those who feel using decals on figures is sort of cheating because you could very well be overlooking a method that could bring your project to the next level.  What I did here was no short cut,  I'm not even sure if any time was saved going this route.  The application of decals to the surcoat alone took the better part of an afternoon and after being done two thirds had to take a break from both a sore neck and back.  Was it easier?  Well that depends if you are capable with the computer and particularly some sort of photoshop program.  The technology is there so take advantage of it.  It is a lot easier to blow up an image on screen and work on it there as compared to straining your eyes or using a magnifying glass.  For over thirty years now I have both been painting on canvas and building kits and I don't think I could get as intricate a job on that textile pattern by doing it freehand.  If someone out there can, my hats off to them.  Nuff said...
