British 1st Para Medic uniform question
Posted by psstoff995 on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 10:13 PM
Did the medics of the Red Devils wear the white bands on their left arm with the red cross/red cross on white circular background on their helmet? Was this a non combat requirement or were they required to wear this in combat as well? I know back in the day medics weren't suposted to be shot at and Im pretty sure that both sides did a pretty good job about that... so I'm guessing they were IDed as such at all times? Any reference/pictures of models would be a big help, I've been googling for British Medics and Paratrooper Medics and Red Devils Medics and all I came across was one picture with a guy from the 82 Airborne, and even then it wasnt during combat...

Have looked at my Osprey book on the Paras and through my book on Arnhem but in none of the photos can you identify a medic!

I suspect that unlike the US troops the Brits just kept everything low key!  In fact medics as known in the US army were not used by the British.  Their medics were known as "orderlies" and certainly no one would have a red cross marked up on a helmet.  Any doctor attached to the paras would have been in all probability from the Army Medical Corps and probably only wore the medical badge for the service ( the staff and snake logo).  But an real expert may come along and disprove all I have said!!

Hi, british paras did not have red cross on there helments easy target for a jerry sniper also the helmets the paras used was covered in scrim [camoflage] An armband was used much easier to pull off and on when you had to get around the battlefield. The Parachute Regiment have their own museum also the Royal Medical Corps. The German army was quite good at respecting such people as medics but the SS was not. And the battle at Arnham Holland was fought against the SS

edorc, RHA, thank you very much. The verlin kit I have has the paras with the netted helmets and no crosses anywhere so I'll leave them as is. Thanks for the info about the SS not respecting the off limits thing with the medics, thats very interesting.
