[small update] 1/6 resin Armor Hunter Rathalos
Posted by PatlaborUnit1 on Friday, August 17, 2007 11:18 PM

Ok, final update before the Nats next week. I fly out Thursday [assuming I don't get a cat5 'cane up my tailpipe, thank you very much!!!!!] Tonight I got done with the primary weapon. Tomorrow I go with the local club to the WWII Museum in New Orleans, then back home and back to work on the armor and fittings.  I need to touchup the Alclad, and I think the horns are too glossy, I was going for a satin finish.

The weapon has been a blast to paint, and I dug into my wife's beading supplies for the fetishes.

Also here is a shot of the cherry blossom tattoos before I painted the petals and toned it all down.

Yes, going outside showed me a couple of tiny pinholes that have survived my repeated layers of primer and paint that dont show up under my "daylight" type bulbs at all. I had to get my LED light out to find them again once a came back inside. I plan to fill the holes and repaint over with cherry blossom tattoos.

Also I heated the helmet and after working to improve the fit (for the third time, adding the hair on the side REALLY changed the fit) i opened its lower flanges up a bit for more visibility, windswept the hair and now the tatoo is visible where before it was almost totally hidden behind the hair and flanges.

I'm still having fun! :D

David, awesome work mate. This is so good to see, and I really like the way you've achieved the look of peelin' bark, nice one.

Natural daylight will always show up any mistakes in your paintin', and if you can get your work to look perfect in this light, then your on top of your game. This is how I work when paintin' my figures.

I see the wisdom of taking photos of your figures outside, now I see that I need to go back in and redo those eyelashes. Everything you see painted here was done before 2PM today in Vallejo and wargame acrylics, except for the eyelashes, I used a gundam marker. I won't do that again!  Even though 95% of everything you see painted here today will be totally covered by her armor, I want the figure painted to the standard that she could stand alone (with the OTHER leg attached) by herself without her armor chest and backpieces.  Her eye color does not appear here, here eyes are a very dark green that I custom mixed today, and used USA Uniform and Green Ochre in the iris for color striations and a smaller black pupil (*since she will be "outdoors" on the base) Some of the shadowing does not really show here, its odd that since I painted her outside and can plainly SEE the shadows outside, they don't transfer to the camera.  I read a thing a while ago on a forum that to make more realistic tattoos, use a less vibrant color for your design, then apply a very thin layer of the base flesh over it , to it looks as if it is PART of the skin, and not ON the skin. It suitabley toned the blue down.

UPDATE: 1/6 resin Armor Hunter Rathalos
Posted by PatlaborUnit1 on Sunday, July 8, 2007 1:26 PM

Small update today.
I painted the skin tones with Mr. Color, and I loved the colors I acheived but didnt recieve good results using regular Mr. Color thinner. Im told my problems I experienced will be overcome with further practice with this paint (I'm new to Mr. Color) and Leveling thinner which is on its way to me now.

Here is a piece of driftwood I found, it may be a broken old root, and Iwill be incorporating this into the base along with other natural pieces. I need to paint the moss on the bottomside, I applied Static Grass now it is ready to paint.

Zen-Builder,

I don't know anything about figures, but why doesn't the original caster of these figures license their production?  Do you get more for the originals when they are limited run?  Can the originals still be purchased?  Does purchasing recasts of limited run kits negatively impact the income of the original sculpter if he has no more originals to sell?  I can totally understand not buying recasts of say a Revell helo that's currently being produced, but I'm not so sure about a product that can only be found as a recast.  Is this how the Asian market works?  Is there any other alternaive if you want an Event Only kit?  Will the sculpter be selling the same casts at the next event?

   Thanks,

           Ray

If in fact this is cheap and poor- if in fact pirated-- then it is FAR and AWAY superior to the first runs I have purchased!!!!

David

Trust me it is PIRATED, E2046 is one of the greatest recasters out there. They are happlily copying kits that my japanese friends mastered.

Where did you get those first runs from?

Yahoo Japan, the original maker at a show in japan or taiwan/thailand?

No need to reply, I have been hearing all the justifications/excuses/etc for the last 10 yrs.

Here is an update on what I did this afternoon. The upper arm holding the knife/tail/whatever will point up to the sky, totally open for view. The kit part is a simple glue-on hand that glues to a fully-filled wrist. I drilled this all out, cut away the "base plate" from the bottom of the hand and made a new, worn out glove extending from the bottom of the hand with Magicsculp, texturing it with both my fingerprint and a toothbrush giving it a fantastic worn leather look, and using a toothpick to make the lines and folds where gloves typically have wear after use. Go look at your leather garden gloves and you will see what I tried to do here. After mixing MagicSculp can be worked for about 40 minutes (and it is hot in here and I used a hair dryer to heat the fingers and bend them more).

The wrist guantlet was gouged out and drilled to accept the wire on the hand so now when you look down into the wrist (as judges will) it has depth, where before it was just glued on and looked really dorky! I may make this hand removable, permanently mounted to the shaft on the weapon, so I can remove it for transport, using magnets in the wrist to hold it together as the other arm is.

Hope, you are aware that you bought a RECAST and cheap/poor PIRATED copy of the original kit.

The kit was a limited EVENT ONLY release in japan.

Here is a beauty of a kit I Picked up recently from E2046.com  I have learned the figure is based on a popular game called Armor Hunter, basically killing dragons/ beasts, scale them for thier armor and wear it as your own, along with your standard quests.  This figure is from the game.

Here are my thoughts on it so far:

Sculpt: Nice, crisp sculpt, great face and fantastic armor features.  Very nice casting!

Stance: leans back at an odd angle and arm is wierd, and I will close up the right hand. I like         the feet and how they create more balance for the piece, will be easy to wire to a base.

Casting: About as nice as they come considering complexity.  Mild split lines, average to easy         cleanup.

Resin:  Perfect, semisoft sweet smelling easy to work with, love E2046's resin

To date I have cleaned her up , soaked her in Castrol Super Clean for two days to release mold agents, cleaned up parting lines and buffed her down. I needed to give her a breast reduction to get the armor chestplate to fit right, but this is common in this type kit. I added a pair of magnets in the left arm for removeability as well as the top of the head/ helm so I can remove that for tranpsort. I forgot all about the armored arm cover when I bonded the right arm on, so she will get an amputation tongiht to fix that little "problem".

I Plan on a deep forest type base for her and I will draw as heavily as possible on my Ray Rimmel Building Dinosaurs book for base ideas.

Now THAT's a knife!!
