W.I.P. Roman Gladiator 'Mirmillo'
Posted by FingersEddie on Friday, June 29, 2007 7:43 AM

I have this one ready to go. Unfortunately it came with a missin' part, namely the plume. I have asked the store to get the part and send it on, but i'm not sure i'll wait for it.

Judgin' by my references it appears that the 'Mirmillo's' helmet bein' shaped like a fish (Mirmillo), didn't necessarily have a plume. The most common look of this helmet was with a bronze comb, in which case i've decided to scratchbuild one usin' some 3/4mm styrene sheet for the support, and 1mm styrene for the actual comb itself.

Here is the top half of the helmet fitted with a scratchbuilt alternative comb, or fin.

I wasn't sure about addin' the feathers on either side of his helm, they seemed a little fancy to me, but I have this built up, now!

This is why I was attracted to this figure, the stance. Is this at the start of gladiatorial combat or at the end, awaitin' the audiences 'yes or no', for the final killin' stroke.

The choice is mine, there could be blood...

I went with the feathers, in the end. This is at the start line now!

Berserker, these figures are produced by Pegaso, and you can pick them up from any good retailer of figures. Pegaso Miniatures are one of the mainstream figure companies and produce some of the finest figures.

Here is jus' a small update. The loincloth was basecoated with Vallejo Red, shaded w/ Cadmium Dark Red and Lamp Black, and highlighted w/ Cadmium Medium Red and Naples Yellow Hue.

In the states, both The Red Lancer and Sentinel Miniatures carry the Pegaso line. I did 6 of their gladiators a few years ago and they are superbly engineered. I was able to paint before assembly and had not touch up needed.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.
