I will look into that.  Thanks.  I am slowly working on thw Dio.  It will be a scene dipicting SADF troops during "Operation Hooper" in the late 80's in Southern Angola.  We will see how it turns out.

Another suggestion - going by the box art, you might get some useable figs out of Dragon's US Navy SEALs II (#3316).  The bush-hat worn by the Stoner gunner looks like a perfect match to the SADF one.  As a side-benefit, the "Rick" trooper (I think he looks like the "Rick" character from Magnum, PI, anyway) could be swapped off to IanIsBored for conversion into a Somali militiaman!  Big Smile [:D]

(man, you get an SADF dio cranked out and I'm gonna be almost as proud of it as if I'd done some building!)

I have to get a digi camera.  Mine disappeared when My Drug dealing father-in-law moved in and his friends started coming over to the house.  Wife doesn't have the heart to throw him out to the streets.  She won't let me either.  But this is another story.  I will post when I get something worthy of posting.  In a bad mood today.  Sorry guy's

Yeah the Fn is called the R1 by the SADF.  I'm modifying WW2 brit's, and Israeli para troops  to see how that will work out.  Be back shortly.

I.  Am.  An.  IDIOT!!!

I took the TIME to actually LOOOOOK at the SA-Soldier website and their pic galleries!  SADF didn't wear shorts!  NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Instead, their fatigues and web-gear look suspiciously like european-theater Brit gear!!  http://cgi.ebay.com/BRITISH-INFANTRY-ON-PATROL-TAMIYA-1-35-MINIATURE-35223_W0QQitemZ330155486381QQihZ014QQcategoryZ145974QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem  CHange out their WWII web-gear for stuff that's more modern and POOOOOF!!  I'm looking at a training pic in the SA-Soldier galleries right now that has the guys carrying FALs with what look like modern US plastic canteens worn in *front* where we'd wear ammo pouches instead.  They've got on bush-hats covered in clipped grasses for a ghillie effect.

With the Brit fig's you'll likely have to do something with their boots, tho...

Keep the posts and ideas coming!!!!   It is all being copied so none is forgotten.  As for G-36's I haven't a clue.  Will ask around though.  If I knew how to post pic's I would put up a couple of shots of the Ratel 20 ICV.  A Buffel is in transit as we speak.  Also are the African heads Caucasian or African?  Makes a differance of unit choice.  All of my Kits are from the Bushwar 1966-1989.  I am also gearing up to do Rhodesian Bushwar vehicles and Troopies in the future.  Bow [bow]

Warrior makes a great Resin set of 6 Modern African heads.  three have soft tanker "helmets" one has a beret, one has a beret and aviator style sunglasses and the last has just a plain head with hair.

Well, that's just off the top of my head.  I've avoided the desire to do any SADF dio's based on a total LACK of SADF vehicles other than the Olifant.  (some Panhard AML's would be nice, kit-makers!)

No, my pain is far worse - modern Bundeswehr!  Where the HECK do I get ahold of a buncha G36's fer crying out loud!!!

Thanks for the reply.  Didn't think anyone was going to help.  I have tons of visuals, including the site you specified.  Hey, I reely appriciate the comment.  WW2 Figs?  Never thought about that.  I've got Italeri's modern wpns kit.(x2)so I have x6 R1's and x6 G-3's.  Need more though as I need to crew an Olifant, Semel, Olifant Mk1, Ratel 20, Buffel, and Casspir.  Will need more in future for other projects too.  This is becoming a nightmare!  I will use your suggestions, and further research this project.  I am also using Osprey's Modern African Wars, and South African Spec Force's books.  Looks like I better corner the market on Green Stuff.LOL  Keep suggestions coming I will use them!

More questions - SADF or modern SANDF?  I've found some pics of both and have a few ideas.  For figures, I'd look at several Dragon/DML kits - the Israelis, as you already mentioned, Viet-Nam era figures look like a reasonable match (ie: no flak-vests), Africa Korps figs of all sorts, and 8th Army Desert Rats (WWII-era).  I think any of those would get you close to what you want to use.  Also, if you need some photo references, here's a couple I came up with!

Do you have any particular pics you are working from, or are you short of visual references?

Okay here's a stab in the dark.  I need some help with suggestions on converting kit figures to South African Troops.  i have been using Israeli stock kits, and Gmaes-Workshop Greenstuff to mold/model load bearing gear, and uniforms.  Anybody have any suggestions?  This is very time consuming and i enjoy it, but short cuts would be wonderful.
