how to start over with a figure
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, August 16, 2007 5:26 PM

So I was going thru my parts/project organizer the other day and ran across a gent who is partially painted and assembled.  As I remember it, he is painted with acrylic paints.  I'd like to strip the pain off him and start over, primarily because he'll be wearing a totally different camo scheme.  Anyone have any suggestions for me on how to remove acrylic paints from a partially-assembled figure?

Here's the hapless lad:

And here's his "big brother," responding to to the call:

Acrylic can be stripped with ammonia or Windex.  Spray it on the figures or immerse them in the ammonia, seal them in Tupperware or a baggie and let them set overnight.  It should loosen the paint and allow it to be washed off.  You may need to rub it down with an old toothbrush to get the paint out of all the nooks and crannies.  You can use the same technique on enamels with simple green, brake fluid, or (my favorite) oven cleaner.

Good luck.

Thankee! I'll hunt around and see if we *have* any windex or ammonia - I believe we do, under one of the sinks.

Pine-Sol works good too.

When I asked my lady-love this morning "Ok, about that ammonia for stripping this figure..." she says, "Pine-Sol should work just fine, too!" and handed me the bottle!

And it did!  Pulled the guy out a bit ago and scrubbed him under running water with a soft-bristled toothbrush.  Most of the paint sloughed right off, with only a bit holding on in the creases, so back into the drink he went.  His bush-hat popped off during the clean-up, so if the rest of him goes to pot, I'll have that left off for another figure!
