Very nice.  The Appy reminds me of Dotty.  She was an Ap my mom had when my sister was little.  Odd that the warrior is in full paint and his horse isn't though.

sounds good Al... I was there last year and it was a great time.  I think that's what got my juices flowing to start back up into figure painting.  They had an armour section there and I brought a few things.  My Abrams got Bronze there last year.  This time I want to bring some figures.  What took the cake was going to that symposium.  Great stuff!

Thanks. Yes, the LI Show has been a regular stop on my circuit for 4 or 5 years now. Always a good time. Several of my clubmates attend as well and it is to them I owe a lot of my progress.

As the event approaches, we'll coordinate more precisely.

Thanks again. Those are Woodland Scenics "Bushes" in olive green since that has a more dried look that the similar "clump foliage" I have in dark green.

Thanks, guys.

Ian, the cougar's hide was a sore point for me. I painted first in tan, did an oil wash then added drybrushing. It turned out looking more like a tiger than a panther. IMHO, the sculptor gave the skin too much texture, hence some people thinking this was a bear in the oroginal boxart. Mountain lions, like most of the big cats, have very fine coats that show little texture. I considered covering the whole thing in Magic Sculpt, but worried if this might have an effect on the fit of the rider to the horse.

Looks increible, and I ove the pose/base.  My only small gripe is that I think you could have/can bring out the texture in the mountain lion's hide/fur a little more.  Looks great!

Completed Mounted Crow Warrior
Posted by ajlafleche on Monday, September 24, 2007 6:58 PM

Here is Seil's completed 54mm mounted Crow warrior with wolf/dog by Andrea.

The clothing beadwork is based on patterns in the Osprey "American Plains Indians" book. He is wearing a hawk headdress which I painted as a sharp shinned hawk which fit the scale size (about 12 inches) and is found in the northern plains, home to the Crow or Absarokee tribe.

The skin saddle, which some people thought to be a bear, is a mountain lion and painted as such, based on photos from the internet.

In painting this figure I researched the Appaloosa horse and found they often have striped hooves which are replicated. Their sclera, the whites of the eyes, normally shows as well. The mane and tail were painted white and given a full or partial Payne's Gray oil wash. There is a bit of gray dappling around the eyes and lips.

I took the spare feather headdress and added it the horse's mane. The rein is cotton thread rather than the included lead foil which I fear would have been hard to cut.

The kit includes white metal foil for the longer fringe on the rifle case and white metal for the end piece. I thought the original die cut on the long fringe looked too wide. Cutting it did not work out so I replaced it with wine bottle foil which I was able to cut into thin strips. I did the same with the end piece.

Seil also includes a nicely engraved name plate. I bought the base right after buying the kit at MFCA last spring. When I walked past it on the display table, I knew I had to have the base for this kit.

Enjoy.
