Highlighting/shading on clothing+ Color suggestions for celt?
Posted by IanIsBored2000 on Sunday, October 21, 2007 6:26 PM

I decided to try out a 54mm figure......I picked out this Celtic warrior:

So on to the questions.

1.  For getting the highliting/shading in clothing folds, what order would you do it, or even better, does anyone have a good step by step for it?

I'm thinking, I could lay down my base color to start, then with a thinned and slightly darker version of my base color, get into all the creases, and finally a light drybrushing/highliting with a lightened shade of the base color?  I'm using GW acrylics.

2.  How do you replicate patterns such as plaid, stripes and checkers on clothing?  Do you just try your best or is there a technique to getting really straight lines?  It would be easy on a flat surface, but going in and out of the folds in the clothing seems like it would be hard to get the patterns right.

Here you can find a guide for painting with acrylics:

It's done by Vallejo, "probably the best acrylics in the world" !! Big Smile [:D]

Search here for "painting with decals" for your plaid pattern. I've seen others use decals in 120mm for repeating patterns. BTW, the real credit for this goes to senojrn. Thanks Nate! Ian, I hope this helps.

Thanks both of you!  The tutorial was jsut what I was looking for, and the "painting with decals" was very interesting, but seems a bit complicated for me.  Thanks again, I'll post plenty of pictures once I start.

I found some good tutorials on Historica Formica, and just got a nice slection of colors of winsor and newton oil paints for $10 on ebay.  Now I'm starting to think about colors.  Anyone have suggestions?  I was going to do a bronze type of metal for the armor "scales" of his cuirrass.  The shirt and pants is what I havent decided.  All records of Celts from this perdiod show them in everything from fighting naked, to checkers to very bright and mismatched colors.  I was thinking of doing a purplish color for the shirt, and maybe a light blue or dark blue for the pants, or maybe even green pants.  I thought these would be good colors for playing around with shading and blending the oils.  Any thoughts?  Thanks, Ian
