Faces. HELP!
Posted by grizz30_06 on Monday, April 28, 2008 11:36 AM

Ok I am trying to improve my figure painting but I am still having problems.  I worked on three last night and only one of them did I like and this morning I look at him and well it looked a little "skeletal".  I got Vallego's flesh pack.  I like the paint but it seems to dry before I can "blend" it.  Should I just go the oil paint route?  Is there something I can add to the paint to slow the drying time?

I have done some "Ok" figs using just a base coat of fleash and some oil washes but I want more detail.  I usually do armor and personally I think a tank looks better with a few figs but I want my figs to look a good as the vehicle (or better).  I have looked at painting Berman's way (or however it is spelled) which gave me the idea to just start using oils but I hate to think that I wasted money buy the Vallego pack.

Go here, then click on model color and scroll down for Vallejo's tutorial You can download it for ease of reference.

These paints aren't really blended as oils are but applied in thin, semi translucent payers to get the same effect.

Faces are always difficult, especially if you have soft features. Just keep practicing. If you can post pictures, we can help you along better with specific pointers.

Vallejo acrylics do a drying retardant, you use it in tiny amounts as the instructions on the bottle say and it will delay the drying time but use it sparingly. Too much and it will take longer than you want, belive me.

Practise is the best thing you can do. Speaking personally i rarely use acrylics bursh painted except for small areas. Airbrushing and pastels being my weapons of choice but whatever technique works best for yourself then stick with it.

Never used oils at all meself so i can't advise you there but if that method ends up suiting you better then go with it.

Good luck!

As long as you already have the necessary acrylic paints, use them. Get some Acrylic Retarder, this will slow down the drying time and allow you to blend them. I used to use oil paints for decades to paint figures, but with 5 premixed acrylic flesh tones and a little bit of retarder, there is no reason to screw around mixing oil paints anymore. Hasn't hurt the trophy case either...

Ok I went back with the article in hand and kept at it.  The "ok" faces are a little better (the not ok one got stripped and started over).  I think that I am shifting my gears to use these Acrylics.  By the way I really like to give things an oil wash (like my armor models) do any of you do the same with figs?  I like how it give a "dirty" effect (like they are in a battle or something).

The only time I use an oil wash any more is for hair or fur. All my other highlighting and shading is done with layering.
