Thank you all so much for the tips. I really appreciate the information!

Honestly, I picked the Tomb Kings because I knew I'd have fun painting them, that and the fact they're undead. I don't know how to play Warhammer yet, but I'll get there! Slaaneshprince, thank you so much for tips and hints on the army. I'm sure they'll come in handy.

Our Hobbytown is starting up a Blood Bowl League and I asked about it 2 weeks ago and wound up buying a team on the spot (there goes MORE money!). I bought the Khemri team again....because they're my Tomb Kings kickin' butt on a football field!

I'm so glad I did that because my attention has shifted to assembling and painting them in preparation for a good old fashioned slaughter (by me). In doing that, I've learned a lot just through trial and error and re-trial. I feel better about getting serious with my Tomb King army and am a little more confident in my painting abilities. I've learned a lot by painting my BB team and it's going to help me do a better job on my baby boyz!

I've only just played my second game ever of Blood Bowl...but I think the Khemri team is going to do well!

Thanks again demono, wolfie and Slaanes!!!

Welcome, fellow follower of Chaos! I see the 4 great ones are starting to shine down on our blessed forum!
As to your question, we are planning not so much as a tournament as a "demo" of sorts at the Forum Meet next November. I would love for this to turn into a "Battle Royal" for all the marbles! What fun!

Hey Warhammer fans!!!

First off, you said your wife was interested in Tomb Kings? EXCELLENT choice!!! BE SURE to include the most devistating war machine in recent years, The Casket of Souls! It is a pivotal peice to any TK army. The Screaming Skull Catapult is also an excellent seige device. A major plus to rhis army: Immune to Psychology!!! Biggest Weakness: They must stand & hold in charge attempts against them (no fleeing). When not playing my personal favorite (Slaanesh), Tomb Kings are hard to beat. Hint: Beef up on the Magic Items.

As far as paint goes, I find that Reaper paint is far superior than Citadel (and usually costs around a buck less).

As for a tournament, When & Where???

*snip*

Consequently, does anyone have any tips for the following? I'm using Citadel's "Scab Red" as one of my colors and I've already painted on 4 coats of it. It's just thin and runny though and it's not covering solidly. At this rate I'll be applying 6 more coats before it looks decent. Any thoughts??

Thank you!

I personally am not a big fan of their paints, (1) because of the expense and (2) what demono said, some of their colors just act funky. Not sure if its the pigment or what they are suspending the pigment in, I have found their yellows to be...bleh. If you are going to continue using acrylics, you may want to use another brand. I use "Liquitex" which comes in a larger bottle, good quality, and can be found in art stores for a much better price. This is just my opinion, but I have about 30 of the citadel colors and the only ones i use are their metals, I do like those. Big Smile [:D]

Debbie,
Welcome to the forum, and to the Warhammer World!
I've found that Scab Red works best as a base coat over a black primer. It doesn't do too well for covering large areas on its own. Try brushing a little Blood Red over the top of it to get a nice layered effect, then top with a red ink to blend. Unfortunately, some of their colors don't cover as well as others.

This is all great information! Thank you everyone for your posts. (this is my first post)

I became interested in Warhammer after co-judging a local model show where Wathammer figures were entered and in a category all by themselves (last month). I began inquiring about Warhammer and the guys that work at our HobbyTown were very eager to talk about it and give me tips, pointers and advice on where to start.

So, I started out with the How to Paint Citadel Miniatures book and read through that. I've never assembled a model or painted anything using any kind of techniques such as dry-brushing. I bought some cheap- minatures at the suggestion of an experienced painter/player, but just couldn't get into it.

My inital thoughts were to experiment with figures I didn't really care about to get painting techniques down and then choose an army to build (and eventually rule..I mean PLAY with). :) Instead we went and took the plunge and each picked an army that appealed to us from reading through their book and of course how they look!

I chose the Tomb Kings. I bought the Tomb King on Chariot figure to start with and am in the process of buildin/painting it. MonsterArmor (my BF) coached me through cleaning and assembly and I'm kind of winging it on the paint job, but I think I'm doing good so far!

I can't wait to have a good base army so I can take the next step and learn how to play!

I would think a store that carries the figures and books would also carry the magazine. They might go quick though. You could always let them know you're interested and maybe they'll increase the quantity ordered or reserve a copy.

You can always order back issues through their online store.

Or buy a subscription so you don't miss an issue. It's like $50 for a year, but it's also $5 off the rack so you'd be ahead with the subscription. If I recall correctly, in the past they they offered free stuff with the subscription. You might want to call them or look through that Troll Magazine (?) that comes in White Dwarf sometimes.

Don't you mean $45? At their website (my local store is the same price), it's $75 for the box and $30 for the rulebook. Unless you know of a place to get it cheaper. Big Smile [:D] Wink [;)]

Nonetheless, your point is still a good one. With core units running between $25-$30 a box, the 70 miniatures are worth the cost difference.

Another question about 6th Edition... Smile [:)]

Besides all the extra figures, is there any reason to get the Boxed Set vs. only the Rulebook? I have my 5th Edition books, dice, templates, etc. I know in the 5th Edition boxed set, in addition to the rulebook was a Battle Book and I think there was also a pad of army forms (or something...memory is fuzzy).

I'm debating which route to go. For the price of the boxed set, I could purchase the rulebook and a couple of Army books. However, the extra figs wouldn't be a terrible thing to have either. So many choices... Smile [:)]

I bought some Citadel Colours paints back in the early '90s (made by Games Workshop). They were the kind with the plastic bottle, and plastic, flip-top lid. All paints are still in excellent condition.

monsterarmor,
You might want to check out the newest White Dwarf. It has several rules updates for the Dark Elves, including updating the Executioners, Cold One Knights, Chariots, Cauldron of Blood, Witch Elves, in fact, just about everything! Makes the Dark Elves much more powerful now. You can also download the updates at www.games-workshop.com

Hope to play you soon!

Im halfway finsihed painting my first kit, the Dark Elf Cold One Chariot. Now Im looking at getting some troops this weekend!

QUOTE: What do you think about the 6th Edition rules?

The 6th Edition has commonly been renamed to "MagicHammer" due to the overpowering nature of spells. Very nasty, some of them. Overall though, it's a bit more balanced as far as troops go, and limits the incredibly powerful troop choices in an army, making you focus more on "core" troops, thus making you spend more money on their stuff. It all works out in the end, though.

As for having old miniatures, they specifically state that any old models can be used in the armies, as long as the troop choice is supported. For example, I can still use my 15 year old Chaos Knights, but I can't use the Chaos Dwarf war machines, as they no longer exist in the rules. As for weather it looks odd or not, no. There are enough similarities that they wouldn't look odd in the slightest. In fact, I prefer some of the older ones. The new Slaan Mage just doesn't look right to me.

What do you think about the 6th Edition rules?

Yeah, I recently saw the Lizardmen Army Book at the store. I didn't have an opportunity to browse through it, but I was glad to see it. I saw they've redone figures for them and wondering if it's going to look odd if the old and new figures are used in the same army.

Definately 6th edition. At least all of your army books are out now, I'll be bringing my Khorne army, so it should be fun. My wife may possibly bring her Gobbos.

Might be fun. That gives me plenty of time to build an army. Wink [;)] The way I look at it, bringing along Warhammer figs kills two birds with one stone -- something for the display and something for the game.

My collection consists mainly of Lizards, Brettonian and Empire troops. So it'll most likely be one of those.

Sixth Edition rules if we did? I have yet to pick up 6th Edition books, but I plan on doing it in the next couple of months. It's just hard to spend money on new books when the old ones are sitting there in excellent condition. Actually the hard part is justifying it to the wife.

I will do up a list on the weekend. As far as I can remember there were Bretonian Knights, Bowmen, Empire Regiments, Empire Knights, Empire Warriors, Skeleton Warriors, Skeleton Horses, Zombies, Elves, and a few metal ones (special figures). And now that I am remembering, a Castle (partially assembled) too. Anyway, I will make a list and post it.

Tim,

All printed above is good info. I have never played the game although I own every manual, compendium, and WD since about 1988. I also have a collection of unpainted miniatures that keeps growing. Its a sickness that does not get better with time just more expensive. Anyway, start out simple, use acrylics, learn color theory, how to lay in good base coats and as you become more confident, graduate to more advanced skills. Also, pick up some good painting guides. I have a couple of the citadel painting books, think an FSM miniatures painting guide, and a book by Shep Paine laying about somewhere. After all these years I still havent nailed down a technique unique to myself but dabble a little with everything (except oils, havent given them a go yet although I own a plethora of the tubes). Keep hacking away at it and dont get discouraged if your figures do not look like the ones on the pages of WD. Most of those ppl have been painting for years and get paid for it. Enjoy the new hobby. Big Smile [:D]

eBay is probably the best. The figures should do well there. To get an idea what they're going for, do a search and look at "Completed Items".

BTW, What kind of figures? Warhammer Fantasy? If you get a list together, let me know. Maybe I can sweet talk the wife. Smile [:)]

Can anyone tell me where I can post Warhammer figures for
sale on-line. I have a heap of stuff. Most of it is still sealed.
Some are probably OOP as they are a few years old.
Don't have a list as I am at work. Been meaning to pull the
box out of the closet for a long time now.

Thanks,

I have to disagree. I've learned a great deal about painting miniatures from looking at the pics of Golden Demon winners, the Heavy Metal articles, and even the stuff shown just for giggles. There's a wealth of things to be learned from those old Dwarfs. You may not be able to do your miniatures in the same quality that they pay people to do them, but it's a great place to learn a few ideas, and an even better place to learn some new tactics. JMHO

Your girlfriend wants to get into Warhammer? She's a keeper. Smile [:)]

My wife will paint them, but refuses to learn to play. Thankfully I have two boys who seem eager to play. A couple more years and it'll be gaming night every night. Wink [;)]

I got bit by the Warhammer bug about 5 years ago after playing a couple of games / demonstrations put on by the Outriders. I have a decent collection of stuff, but I really haven't been able to play much. That doesn't dent my enthusiasm though. Recently I found out about a local group so hopefully I'll be able to get more gaming done now.

So I'm not sure there's much I have to offer, but here goes.

1. Find a local club/group who plays. You don't want to keep losing to your girlfriend all the time. Wink [;)]

2. If you haven't bought books / rules yet -- make sure what you're buying is 6th Edition stuff. On eBay, there are a lot of books up for sale which are 5th Edition. At the local HobbyTown, they carry both and if you don't know better, you might buy the wrong edition. Maybe it's not a big deal, but why confuse yourself.

3. Be prepared to spend a lot of money. Wink [;)]Smile [:)]

4. Check your local gaming stores for good deals. Some places sell off collections or parts from people getting out of Warhammer or maybe switching armies. Sometimes you can get some really good deals. The local HobbyTown usually has a basket or two of Warhammer Fantasy, 40K, and LotR figs which are 40% off. This past week I stopped in and all their Citadel paints were 40% off. I've also found old copies of White Dwarf for a couple of bucks.

5. Pick up an issue or two of White Dwarf. Excellent magazine. Pricey, but good. If you can afford a subscription, it might be worthwhile. The reason for the high cost is because it's a subscriber supported magazine, aside from GW stuff, there is no advertising.

6. Regarding eBay... Yes, there can be some deals found. Especially when dealing in lots which are bulk plastic figs and/or used. Otherwise it's difficult finding bargains. By the time a lot of the auctions are finished and shipping is included, it's either very close or in some cases over what you pay at the store. Oh, recently I saw a couple lots of White Dwarf (10-20 issues) which looked good. If you can get your hands on something like that it might be worthwhile. The thing is you probably wouldn't want to go more than a couple of years back. Try to stick with current stuff while you're first getting into it.

7. See all those excellent figures in the Warhammer books?? Ignore them. Don't even look at them. Wink [;)] When you read about them in the books, they even tell you the figures are done by professional figure painters (or people who have been painting for a long time) and they sometimes spend a day or more on each figure. So, unless you're very talented, don't set your expectations too high.
