1/35 Mt. Suribachi Flagraising presented to Marines at ceremony today
It has been a while since I last posted here and this is why: Today I made a formal presentation of the 1/35 Corree Mt. Suribachi flagraising to the United States Marine Corps League, Baton Rouge chapter, during Memorial Day ceremonies at the USS Kidd DD661 and Louisiana Veterans Memorial Museum . There were a lot of trials and tribulations on this particular kit which are documented elswhere in the forums, plesae see that thread for my discussion and mods of the kit as molded. Vallejo, games Workshop and Reaper figure acrylics were used exclusively.
I was handed this kit a while back by club VP and was asked to finish it in time for presentation today. It was presented early on during the ceremony so I could whisk it back inside to the airconditioned space it will soon occupy inside the museum. With temps in the 90's today and the beating sun, I didn't want to take a chance with the thin resin rifles warping. During the presentation two Marines who were present on Iwo Jima at the time of the second flag raising stood with me with literally dozens more veterans surrounding us in the Memorial Plaza.
The model was painted with exaggerated shadows and highlighting since it will be displayed in it's own special display case indoors. The display base will soon be replaced with a cherry wood plinth to raise it up about four inches to make it easier to see. I may have more pics to add as I strip the photos from the other camera. I want to thank Bob Finly, Lt. USMC and VP Baton Rouge IPMS for organizing this opportunity for me to give something back for those who gave so much.
And yes, that is the finished piece on the WAFB news tonight!
