Miscellaneous US Navy crew in 1/48th?
Posted by the Baron on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 11:46 AM

Hi, all

Does anyone know of any manufacturer who makes US Navy personnel, such as enlisted, apart from flight crews and airedales, depicted in uniforms from the 30's on in to WWII?  And that, in 1/48th scale.

I've been looking for additional personnel to use in dioramas.  For example, in a diorama of the ramp at a Naval Air Station in 1937, I would like to have a couple of sailors in pea coats and caps.

I've been searching through catalogs from the manufacturers I know, and haven't found anything yet.  If there is no such thing, I'll probably modify some other, existing figures and cast them myself.  But if such figures are available commercially, I'd use those first.

Regards,

Brad

Perhaps try some of the ship oriented  hobby websites. I know Eduard makes a set of ground crew/air crew USN figures in 48th. They dont sound like what you are looking for.

Thanks, stikpusher, I think you're right, I think the Eduard sets might be modern Navy flight deck crews.  But I'm still searching.

Verlinden made a WWII Navy carrier deck crew set, as well as a set of pilots.  Apart from the cloth helmets WWII deck crew wore, I can use those figures, too, for ground crew onshore.

But if anyone else has any suggestions, I'd be grateful to hear them!

Brad

The Eduard set, #8506, is labelled, US Navy Personell, 1942. Most are in working poses on an aircraft and are wearing blue dungarees and matching headgear-sailor caps and Chief's cover. Hasegawa and Fujimi made the modern USN deck crew sets. Several of the old Monogram 1/48 naval aircraft kits (TBD, SBD, TBM, F4F) came with some deck crew figures as well.

Thanks, stikpusher, I'm going to track down the Eduard set and have a look at them.

Brad
