pAINTS AND bRUSHES

Hey guys,

I am new to modelling Miniatures. I have read the tutorial posted already, but my real concern is what kind of brushes would I need and whether Tamiya paints are a viable option for painting considering, my skills as a beginner?

As I can state from experience................DONT GET THE TAMIYA ACRYLICS!!!!!! They will annoy you to no end. If the paint is not FULLY CURED then subsequent layers will lift the paint off. They are great for airbrushing Armor and Airplanes but not for figures. I'm gonna reccomend the Vallejo paints. I got some recently and they are a THOUSAND times better. They are slightly more expensive. $3.75 a bottle but they have an eyedropper for the paints so that they are really easy to blend and only use the amount you need. IMO, Windsor and Newton paint brushes are the best. But any good sable brush will do. Value pack just dont give you the same results.

Oh, and rename your title to a specific question. That way you'll get more hits.

David

On the bench:

1/35 Tamiya M26 Pershing-0%

1/144 Minicraft P-38J Lightning-50%

Numerous 1/35 scale figures in various stages if completion.

Ditto to what David said. 15-20 years ago you could have used those Tamiya acrylics, but today's are not really good for brush painting. Cheap brushes are like adding really cheap speakers to a high end audio system.

As to brushes, look for Kollinsky sable brushes. They're pricy but well worth it. This isn't a brand but refers the fur which comes from a the Kolinsky, a type of east Asian weasel, related to mink. The bristles are particualrly soft and hold both a good amount of paint and maintain a really nice point. I've done eyes on 54mm figures with a #2 Kolinsky. Well cared for, they will last a very long time.

Another plus for Vallejo (and the related Andrea line) is that it is recommende that you thin with distilled water. You also need to thin the paint when you take it from the bottle which extends the amount of coverage you'll get. The eye dropper bottles basically never dry out. I have some that's 9 or 10 years old and it performs as well as the most recent bottles I've bought.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

As far as brushes go, not all brushes are created equal. There are brushes specific in design (material) for acrylic paints. Visit your local craft store and do a little investigation as to what is available. Also watch the sales on brushes so you can get those preminum brushes at affordable prices.

Filbert brushes are awesome...I always try to use animal-haired brushes as the bristles will stick together when wet only on natural-haired brushes...sable is preferred...

Don't put em in your mouth, and don't store them tip down, but you knew that. My icon brushes are my favorite tools, of course they're blessed by Fr. and don't get to be used for anything else, but I treat them well. Carry them in a roll and wipe them in the web between thumb and first finger.

I know, I'm weird.
