Navy Jeep drivers.
Posted by st_gorder on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 5:52 PM

Hello everyone,

I'm usually on the aircraft forum but need a question answered.  I have a Hasagawa 1/48 Jeep with decals for Nimitz' "Hush Hush" circa 1942.  What would Admiral Nimitz' drivers uniform look like?  He has a steel pot also.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve Gorder

Depends on what the Admiral is wearing.

If he is in Whites than the driver is wearing his whites too.

However with the steel pot, I would suggest Denium pants and Chambray (light blue) shirt with spit polished black shoes and at least a third class crow on his sleeve.

I know it's only rock and roll, but I like it.

What would the Navy use Jeeps for?

The Navy used Jeeps just like they use HMMWVs today.  They are used for general cargo transport, ferrying of personnel, and as staff officer vehicles.   Contrary to some beliefs, the Navy does conduct some operations on land too.  They have all sot of wheeled vehicles to support them in that function.

The jeep will probably be in a gray paint job, too. Navy personnel did wear OD's during this era (still do).

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

Thanks subfixer, Dan and Gino.  Steel pot in gray?  Anyone else?

Check references.  Navy shore party personnel may be seen wearing OD helmet with 2 to 3-inch Ocean Gray band around it
