Well, considering the accuracy of those old smoothbores, he probably meant just that...

I always paint the whites of the eyes on all my figures, all the way down to 25mm (got some pix around here somewhere...).

I use Raw Sienna mixed 50% w/ white to make the color, or the skin tone mixed the same way.

I saw an interesting blurb on The History Channel about the well known "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes." command.  They placed a fellow at various distances and asked whether the viewing audience could see the whites of the eyes.  The white of the eyes are completely indistinguishable until you and he are practically face to face.

As an example, here's a link to a 75mm vignette painted by Marion Ball.

At 100 mm, absolutely. I always add whites even to 54mm. In fact, you probably should be using a colored iris, black pupil and a white catchlight in that scale. And then a gloss coat.

But, don't use pure white, it's too stark. I use Vallejo pale flesh which is also typically my highesty highlight, so there's a coordination of the colors.

Hi

  Everyone

I have started doing large scale figures (see my 100mm Iron Beard Viking posted here).. but I keep wondering do I really need to do whites in the eyes? I've heard both yes and no answer on this. So what your opinion/technique?

Thanks

Scott
