Minigunner's Ultra Marines!
Posted by Minigunner on Thursday, July 31, 2008 7:54 PM

Hello everyone on the Sci-Fi sector! Those are my two first and second painted Space Marines, from the epic table-top game called Warhammer 40k.! Anyway, Please tell me anything I need to improve or keep on my painting becuse I want to learn! Warhammer 40k. figures will be all I will be doing for now but, I will or may start Space Marine tanks sooner or later (around winter). Hope all of you guys and or gals enjoy my paints! :) (Another note) They are the starter figures from the Ultra Marines Starter Kit, I did buy almost all the other burshes, 19 paints, the Space Marine playing book and "How to paint Space Marines" books, and a "normal" un-started Space Marine Tactical Squad aswell so, if you have advanced ways of painting Ultra Marines, I should be able to keep up and atempt it, if you happen to tell me! :)

Another thing I wanted to add, I did not ink any of them, nor do I know how to, or even were to buy them! So if you do know who to ink Ultra Marines please tell me! :)

They actually look really good. The only thing would be the black where it looks like you improvised for a wash.

Washs are actually pretty easy. Just find your nearest art store, and pick up a tube of artists oil. On WH 40K guys i'd just use black. Then mix it with thinner until it's pretty runny and use a VERY small brush and touch it to the crevices you want "washed". It should just run through the cracks. If it spills over a little, use an ear cotton swab to wipe it away. It'll take a few times until it's perfect but you'll get it eventually.

Even just pick up a codex and they usually give really good painting tips, usually for the army the codex is for but the way they paint works for all the figures.

Ok, thank you FastasEF! I was not sure were to find them, the ink that is. I go to a shop similer to Games Work Shop down the street called Armory Games and they cary all the paints by GWS but when they mentend inks in my "How to paint space marines" book I could not find any inks by GWS and was not sure what to buy at that point! So yes, im very glad to know that you can use inks by different companys, and I thank you again for the infomation! :)

Looks nice!  I'm not big in to gaming miniatures any more, but I always appreciate those who can do a good job on them.  Thanks for sharing!

The inks they are talking about are part of the Citadel paint line.  They come in a whole range of colors and alot of the paint formulas on the GW website's "How to paint ..." articles use them.  If your store carries the whole line of Citadel colors they should be in there.  The bottles are the same little hexagon plastic bottles as the paints.

If at first you do succeed, try to hide your astonishment.

From one mini to another...

Man, these guys look terrific! Really cool looking! I'm not an expert by any means but, I do like to veer off to the 40K side of things from time-to-time. My problem is that I can't find all that I'd like to find locally.

Do these Marines have a mortar section? I did some quick searching when I first saw this thread but didn't see any.

Thanks,
Kevin Keefe

Games Workshop's website should have a list of all the Marine units if youre looking for something like a mortar team.  And if they do make one, you can buy it from their site if you like.

Space Marines do not have a mortar team but the Imperial Guard do. You can get them in Catachan jungle troopers, Mordian Iron Guard and a few others. You can pick up a two man set for $8.00.

Thanks, I'll have to do some more looking around. Been awhile since I last looked. I've done the Catachan Mortar Team and a few other 40k sets. I notice that different sets have the same mortar and I strive to vary the mortar. I know nothing about the gaming aspect of these figures, I just really enjoy doing them from time-to-time...

(Not to take away from the original post/author...)

Thanks,
Kevin Keefe

Thanks everyone so far for your comments and ratings on my figures, I just resently went down to the store that carries my 40k. stuff and bought some tools and paints, along with some modling sand for my bases, also, my good friend Spector gave my some of his fake grass for the bases as well! I'm almost done with my next marine and i'm planing on posting it as soon as its done, so be aware of any updates to this thread! :)

GW inks have been discontinued....
Posted by Ravenseye on Saturday, September 20, 2008 10:49 PM
Hate to say it, GW's line of inks have been discontinued.

But, on the bright side, they have released a series of replacements called Washes.

These are very much like the inks they replaced, but they tend to offer a little bit of color to everything that they are applied to. This is GW's way of speeding up army painting and still getting a decent job out of it.

That is the link to get the set for about $20. They really work well and can be thinned down to do panel line work and such.

Check 'em out if you get a chance!

Minimortar, Space Marines do not have a mortar team but Imperial Graud (sorry if misspelled) has mortar teams that can be put together and painted.

It's a heck of a good start. Most people start off laying on the paint way too thick, but you seem to have it down fine. Some things you may want to pay attention to:

Mold lines. GW plastic is bad here, and it takes a lot of cleanup to get rid of them. There's really nothing to do but settle in for a lot of busy work.

Your blue is a bit flat and monolithic. A good idea for ultrasmurfs is to start with a dark blue and then build up your highlights. Painting at this scale is all about the shadows and highlights to bring out the detail.

Basing: even a simple sand or turf base will help make the model look complete.

I didn't know the Warhammer 40,000 figures were still in production!

I built some of them (Space Marines, Orks, Emperial Guardr, and Chaos SM) a loooong time ago in HIgh School. I never played the game, just collected the figs. I lost track of them. They are either lost in storage in the attic, or they were tossed out long ago...

Glad to see the kits are still around.

Still around and bigger than ever. They recently released 5th edition rules.

Here's one from my collection. ^_^
