Star Trek models... who make them now?
Posted by abacero on Friday, November 21, 2003 6:59 PM
Hi, everybody!

For may years I have been a devoted fan of Star Trek, and I bought most of the plastic models since the original series. All of them were produced by AMT, and later Matchbox absorbed the AMT brand for a little while. Now Ertl has the AMT brand and produced most of the starships from the movies. But most recently I just discovered that Polar Lights are making ST models from the "Enterprise" TV show and a 3 in 1 version of the original Enterprise.

On the other hand, on the Ertl webpage there is no mention of any ST models.

Anybody knows what's going on? Is it possible to still find models from AMT or Ertl/AMT? I was browsing in a couple of hobby stores and the stock is really scarce. And in Hobbytown a guy there told me about a huge ship soon to be released, any information available?

I will appreciate any reply.

Regards,

Alberto

You can still get the AMT/Ertl ST kits on e-bay. Some at a good price.

ST kits are now made by Polar Lights and Bandai.

Try the Trading Post at www.starshipmodeler.com. Kinder prices than E-bay(usually).
You might also consider resin kits as there are quite a few available. Try here:

AMT/Ertl let the Star Trek license lapse as did Revell-Monogram with the Star Trek: Voyager license. Polar Lights and Bandai are the two manufacturers now.

The PL original USS Enterprise can be built into 7 different versions from the first pilot, second pilot, production series, Mirror Universe ISS Enterprise, USS Exeter, Defiant and Constellation. It includes both stickers and waterslide decals and goes for $13 in a hobby shop and $10 in some discount department stores. Great bargin.

Polar Lights and Bandai, as Major Gronovius mentioned are the two companies making Star Trek models.

Bandai released in April 2003 the NCC-1701. Just this October 2003, they released the Enterprise E. Bandai is planning to issue the youngest Enterprise with warp drive the NX-01 (I dont get to watch "Enterprise" so forgive me if I got the ship code wrong).

All units are lighted, and are great to display! The parts are pre-painted in the "Aztec" paint scheme, with great detail work. I have the NCC-1701.

Don't forget the garage insustry resin kits that are out there! Go to www.federationmodels.com and browse thru the Starcraft and Alliance and Warp models sections.

Also, it should be mentioned that each company is carrying 2 scales.
Bandai's kits are 1/850 and 1/1700 so that they can keep each ship within
scale for the smaller and larger ships.

PL is doing the same thing. It is producing a 1/1000 line starting with the TOS Enterprise and a 1/350 line starting with the NX-01. Everyone I know is praying for a 1/350 Refit and Reliant as a "pair". At this scale, the NX-01 is about 24 inches long and 14 inches wide.
