Gundam Astray Red Frame
Posted by TacoBuff on Sunday, November 16, 2008 6:44 PM

All right, I haven't built a gundam in close to ten years, but i found this in the LHS today, and had to have it.  Have no idea about its background, or anything like that, but it looked really cool.  It's an HG (not as good as MG from what i hear?), and so it looks pretty easy to put together.

I'll do a sortof half WIP, mostly a chance for me to stop and ask you gundam gods (I've seen you guy's work) all the dumb questions that pop into my head.

Thanks!

there are grades

NG - no grade, the worst, low detail, limited parts 1/144 1/100 and 1/60 scales

HG - as of late, very good detail, better then the early MG kits, 1/144 size

MG - Very good detail, the later model MGs having extreme articulation and very VERY detailed inner frames and workings.  1/100

PG - less articulation then modern MGs, alot more detail, metal parts, included LEDs and wiring.  1/60th scale, very expensive. Sometimes have problems standing (because of weight, like on the wing zero custom)

As far as that kit goes, its from the Gundam Seed time line,  Astray is a side story off of the main story line. Heres some background (thanks mahq)

Technical and Historical Notes

When the Earth Alliance begins a project to build its own mobile suits, the initial work is done in conjunction with the Morgenroete research facility on the Orb space colony Heliopolis. While Orb assists in the research, they have an ulterior motive: steal the data from the Alliance to build their own mobile suits. From the stolen data, Orb constructs three prototype Gundam Astray units: the P01 Gold Frame, the P02 Red Frame and the P03 Blue Frame. While Orb is able to copy the Alliance's beam saber and beam rifle technology, they are unable to duplicate the Phase Shift armor and compensate by making the Astrays light and maneuverable. As with the Alliance suits, the Astrays are equipped with hand plugs to exchange energy and data with its carried weapons. The Alliance and Orb use different hand plugs, and only weapons designed for the Astray can be used without any modifications. However, the Red Frame is capable of emitting beam energy from its hand plugs for use as an emergency weapon.

The development of the Astray project is interrupted when ZAFT attacks Heliopolis on 25 January C.E. 71. Orb desires to keep the Astray project secret and destroys the Astray factory. However, a Coordinator named Rondo Ghina Sahaku is determined to save the three units. To that end, he downloads the data from all the Astray units into the Red Frame, including the latest version of the Astray operating system. The latest version of the Astray OS allows a Natural to pilot the suit, similar to the OS developed later on by Kira Yamato for the mass-produced MBF-M1 M1 Astray. Following the destruction of the Astray factory, the Red Frame is discovered by Junk Guild merchant Lowe Guele. Although the Red Frame comes armed with a beam saber and beam rifle, Lowe refrains from using these weapons because they drain energy from the Red Frame's battery. Instead, he prefers to use the "Gerbera Straight" katana, which is created for him by an eccentric old man named Un No.

After Lowe discovers the Red Frame, several parties make various attempts to capture the unit. In one such attempt, Orb test pilot Juri Wu Nien briefly steals the Red Frame to test if its operating system allows a Natural to pilot a mobile suit. In his travels, Lowe also encounters the Gold Frame, piloted by a female Coordinator named Rondo Mina Sahaku. In one encounter, the Red Frame is damaged and forced to enter Earth's atmosphere. Lowe repairs the destroyed right arm by replacing it with the Gold Frame's right arm. At Orb's Morgenroete facility, Lowe acquires a flight pack designed for the M1 Astray. Later on, Lowe creates further upgrades for his suit.

thanks for all the info!  Who knew some much went into these suits (well everyone but me it seems).  I've never seen Gundam Seed, but was really into Gundam Wing when it was on cartoon network.  My first model was wing zero actually, might still have parts of him somewhere... hmm...

As far as gundam goes, you have the main line, from the origional, the Universal Century

Mobile Suit gunda, 08th ms team, 0080, 0083, Zeta, Zz, Char's Counter Attack, F91, Victory, Savior.  More or less All of them, save 'savior' and the first half of Zz are very good and worth seeing.

you have G gundam, its like dragonball Z with robots, some like it, I think its horrible.

Gundam Seed, and Gundam 00, basicly Super robot wars with gundam designs, I really dislike them both way to much service to the masses, not enough to the loyal viewers of old, kind of thing

You have wing, which I am a fan of, actuially, despite the super robot wars appeal, the chars were done VERY well, as opposed to seed.

Then you have Turn A... which well, to say its wierd is an udnerstatment.  It basicly says all the gundam universes are the same universe in different time lines, its freaky, but some cool designs.

You have a great kit here boss. the frame astray kits (Red, Blue and Gold) are the top of the line for the HG kits. I myself have this kit and the Blue Frame 2ndL and they are an awesome duo.

also, these are the only seed kits that I really like and have no problems with.(mostly cause the pilots aren't whiny little emo kids)

Some people spend their whole lives wondering if they made a difference. Gundams don't have that problem.

I must admit I like the design of these kits.

The only other seed kit that I can stand is the IWSP strike, just because who can dislike that much massive firepower.

I cant wait to see you build this thing.  Right now im working on updating and prettying up a Gaza C, for the shoulder shields and back done, need to do now the arms and legs (hard part)

Me. Cause my Hi-Nu gundam would eat the strike in all of its forms for breakfast. Newtype = better than couordinater hax. Amuro Ray for the win.

PFt amuro is a panzie... all the gundam pilots are panzies.  Ill take Ramba Ral, or Cima Garahau any day over those little whiny gundam pilots.

It's important to distinguish non-grade by scale...  1:144 non-grades are usually cheap, low-end kits (like the current First Grade line in Gundam 00) - though some 1:144 non-grades (like the Turn-A line) are actually HG-quality. The larger (1:100 and 1:60) non-grade kits these days are like big high-grades, only more detailed.  To me, recent 1:100 and 1:60 non-grades represent the best value for the money when buying Gundam stuff.  The improved hands alone make them a better deal than 1:144 High Grades...

Well, there are High grade, and then the HGUC type line, there alittle different.  When I say No grade, I mean like teh 5 dollar kits that are only 7 pieces, or the old vintage kits.
