MMC Open 2008 (Deadline December 31, 2008)
Posted by tetsujin on Monday, December 1, 2008 11:10 AM
It looks like the Five Star Stories Contest didn't pan out - we did have one entry but that was all.  It's unfortunate, but it's a busy time of the year.  Thanks to everybody who made an effort to participate.

This month's event is the annual MMC Open - entries may be models of any anime or mecha subject...  For those not familiar with our rules, here are a few things to bear in mind:
  • The model must be a fully-painted work, completed by the entrant within the last 12 months
  • It cannot be something that was entered into MMC previously, unless the event it was entered into was canceled, as with the Votoms and FSS events which were canceled due to lack of entries.
  • Entries must include at least three good-quality photos, including front, side, and rear views of the subject.
  • Photo-editing is mostly limited to level correction and similar effects applied uniformly to the whole image.  If you want to watermark your images, we ask that the mark does not occlude any part of the model itself.
  • The deadline for entry is the end of December, 2008. Your entry (including uploaded photos) must be on the site by then. We're not picky about time zones or anything, so you do have a bit of leeway there.

So, basically, anybody can enter just about anything they've made in the last year. It's an all-genre free-for-all.  Let's see who comes out on top...  If you have any questions about the rules or how to submit an entry, please let me know.

Bragging rights.  :)  Plus I try to coax the judges into giving good critique when judging...

Oh, I think I brag enough as it is... Big Smile [:D]

Critique? Is that like criticism? Oh, I don't know, I'm fragile and easily bruised... Sigh [sigh]

The only contest that we had over at MMc that had prizes was the Federation vs Zeon contest.  We had ALOTof people show that normally didnt.  alot of crap too.  I was really disapointed by the judging, to be honest.  Personally I think it was a bit unfair that the prizes went to people who never entered a kit there before, and never entered one after that.

There were a couple other events with prizes.  We may do prizes again in the future.

I think the Fed vs. Zeon contest had a lot of great work, personally.  Even the weaker entries were generally quite good.

As for the prizes - what does it matter if the prize winners hadn't entered on the site before, and what does it matter if they never came back for that matter? They came to the site and entered quality work. So, what, do we disqualify them from the drawing 'cause they're new to the site? Ridiculous. Anyone who enters should have a shot at winning.  If we say "Oh, they're new here, we shouldn't give the prize to them", that's really unfair...  And it defeats the whole purpose of the prize from our perspective, which is to promote involvement in the contest - not just from the people who regularly enter, but from everybody... Anyone who puts in the time and effort to submit a quality entry to a contest should have a fair shot at winning the prize.

I gotta agree w/ tetsujin here. A good model is a good model, no matter how often one posts on a site.

If they gave prizes for some other purpose or agenda, well, that's their prerogative too.

I used to play the Contest Game a few years back, where you study a contest to see what they want and then build to that standard. Every one of them is different, and every one has it's own agenda. That's not bad, it's just the nature of the beast.

The only time something like that makes me mad is if I paid money to enter. I got shut out of a figure painting contest once for being "a professional".

"This contest is for amateurs and hobbyists, not for some ringer to come in and scoop up all the prizes!" they said.

Now I appreciated the "compliment", but I certainly ain't no professional. So I demanded my money back, and never went to that show again.
