i started out exactly where you are dustin. I built what I saw on the shelf at the local store, knowing nothing of the quality of the kits.

Ok, heres my surmise:

1/144 kits are considered to be kid-scale highly posable action figures.  Some are pretty damned nice! I used to be able to get them at Target, but no more....

HG kits are a few years old and will need putty work and such.  Not quite as well detailed, owing to thier age. not quite as posable as some of the newer offerings.  Some are rough to build.

HGUC kits are newer and I have not given these a go yet, but Im told that they are a step above the regular HG kits. the new line of kits such as the Wappa recon, and ground recon teams may be HGUC. Im pretty impressed with the Wappa kit, just swap out the gun for a brass gun and use some German artifacts in 1/35 scale.

MG is Master Grade and its where I spend my time and money.  The newer master grade kits are simply freakin amazing for the money. the new commdand type Zaku with the small Char figure and scissor lift is just awe inspiring. How in the heck they mold these things with those new slide molds....wow...would love to see that on How Its Made one night!

Perfect Grade...the more or less ultimate, with hefty price. There are several of these kits out there. the most common you will see is the PG Wing Zero.  I saw it built up in skeletal form standing on one foot with fingers intertwined and th eother leg raised and bent at the knee. When he got it done it looked fanstastic.

I almost never use correct gundam colors, coming up with my own, or modified paint schemes.  Decals and markings abound, and I use tons of Verlinden dry transfer markings. I take one aircrft marking, lay it down, andcover it with a seond marking, making something all new for the 1/100 mechanics to work around. My Ball is covered with tehse markings. Poor Ball, it got tore up in a --lock it up on the interstate --  incident. there are TONS of detail parts and upgrades for Gundams.

Mecha are giant robot types of anime.  Gundam is just one of them.  For tons of info on Mecha shows check out www.mahq.net.  Some people use Hobby Wave or HLJ but I prefer gundamstoreandmore.com for Gundams.  I know we can't advertise stores on here but just let me say the owner personally called me to work it out when something I ordered was sold out.  Nice guy, good store, and I've always gotten stuff pretty quick.

After listening to Patlaborunit1 I'm thinking of looking at that command Zaku.  Thanks for the tip.  Not to jack williamsfw28's thread but this question has nagged me.  How can we tell which kits are newer, such as the newer MGs like that Zaku?  Shopping online doesn't give too much info.

If at first you do succeed, try to hide your astonishment.

You could go with a 00 kit... but, if you did, you may as well go build a figure of that banjo kid from deliverance... sorry for the rant here, but the way these spinoff shows latley go, 00, seed, even wing to a poing (though it was good) are just reused story lines, ugly characters, over glitsy mechs, and are just bad.  There the wierd inbred bastard son of the origional.

If you want a good experiance building a gundam kit, I truly suggest you go for the Zaku II 2.0 Master Grade kit.

Any of them, there all the same base kit, but different varations.

They are very well tooled, the seams are less then the older kits, the tooling is amazing, and the detail is out of this world.  They are very, very nice kits.

If you do, and I really suggest you do (I love the minelayer) and you really want to go all out for it, let me suggest some other things, eh'

I know thats alot, but you can do some AMAZING stuff if you get some of those AM parts, eh'

I bought alot of Mecha Skunk, he makes good stuff, I have the moneyes, the beam sabers, and a bunch of different chains and tubes, they make the kits look absolutley amazing!

The metal parts just add such a level of awesomness to the kits, there is nothing you can do to the plastic thrusters that will look better then even a bare metal AM one.

I just noticed what you said about the colors.  Well, thats the thing about gundam, there are no 'colors' that are used, Pilots would use their own custom colors, you can do your own, I started a sky blue/bright orange Zaku, for a female pilot.

Ultimatly, you can paint any mech any color you want, just add a ver (your initals) and it works fine, all my customs are ver. Stv

If you want my honest opinion about 00 kits.  I feel they rush them out.  Every month there are like 4 or 5 new kits.  If you go for the 1/100 scale that arent MG there just giant HG kits, there not worth their price.

in all seriousness, I look at the box for the date of the artwork! And that Ver2 Zaku simply rules! Im very impressed with it. Check out the varous build sites on tips to build them. Cutting the large pins back at an angle allows you to put the parts together for various things you need to do, but get them apart again to work on the kit.

http://www.starshipmodeler.biz/
is a good shop for scifi and mech, as well as the other two I linked.

Ok, heres a gundam history

Gundam is the name of a special prototype suit created by the Earth Federation to counter Zeon's Mobile Suits.

The Earth Federation controlls earth and most of the Sides.  Sides are clusters of space colonies, more or less countries.

Side 3 is Zeon, they start a Revolution to become autonomious from the Earth Federation.  They drop a space colony, operation Britan, on earth, to hit Jabrau's the EFSF's main base, it misses and damages alot of the world, most specificly it breaks off part of australia, completly sinking it (Sidney included).

The gundam was made to stop zeon, there was only one made, and it, and it's pilot, were so successfull that they continued the Gundam project, including when the EFSF became corrupt (the enemy) and used Gundams against the heros of the series (See Zeta Gundam)

Zeon created the first Mobile suit.  They were an evolution of mechs used to build the space colonies.

the series started with Mobile suit gundam.  This started the UNIVERSAL CENTURY timeline. Included is Gundam Igloo, MS Gundam, 08th MS team, 0080, 0083, Zeta, Advance of Zeta, ZZ, Char's Counter Attack, Gundam Unicorn, Forumla F90, Gundam F91, Crossbone Gundam, victory Gundam, G-savior.

The majority of these are good, they dont reuse plot lines, though, alot of them are older.  Gundam Igloo is the latest thats not manga... its absolutley amazing, its 100% 3d and it is absolutley amazing, it starts at the beginning of the one year war, when the federation did not have mobile suits, and Zeon did.

Now, that being said, they made spin off series.  Each series has the same kind of storyline, something taking from the origional in one shape of form, as well as a 'Char clone.'  Char is the main villian of the classic gundam.  Char Aznable, the Red Commet, Zeon's lead ace (though, I would argue otherwise) He wears a helm that covers his face.

G gundam, is the first.  It is basicly dragon ball Z with robots, each nation sends a robot into a tourniment to see whos the best (stupidity) Most notable Mech from this suit is the Devil Gundam, and the most kitted is the Shining/God Gundam

Then there was Gundam Wing.  Wing is the best of the spin offs (not just me, its the majority speaking).  It consisted of an evil orginization on earth, (a few of them, fighting between untill one wins)called OZ who are opressing the space colonies. The colonies develop 5 Gundams and send them to earth to do terrorist actions against OZ.  Most kitted kit from this series is Wing Gundam Zero Custom (specificly, this is form the OVA Gundam wing, Endless Waltz, see it, it has great music)

There is another series I know not much about.  Its called After War Gundam X, which is about a play off of of the origional gundam and 'operation britan' where dozens of colonies were droped leaving the world apoclyptic (see mad max, heh)

After this, there is a series that is either loved or hated.  Turn Gundam (thats Turn A Gundam)  It is an interesting premise.  Earth has reverted back to the industrial age, where Bi planes are the most advanced weapons on earth.  The moon is still colonised by 'spacenoids' who have mobile suits.  They invade to take the earth back.  The earthlings discover a burried relic, the Turn A Gundam, as well as some other suits (Zaku Is and IIs).  It has some of the strangest designs of any series (the turn A has a mustache O.o.  This series links ALL of the series together, that they are all the same time line (which reinforces what is said in gundam wing, endless walts 'History is locked in an endless waltz of peace, war, and revolution' (something like that).

There is the series Gundam Seed, which is rather new.  It has three series in it's cannon, Gundam Seed, Gundam Seed Desitny, and Gundam Seed Stargazer (3 episodes actuially not that bad.  This series is trife.  Its their way of doing the origional series again, with better animation.  There are more EXACT plot lines stolen from the universal century series then there are in a soap opera.  Some are almost exact, just change the animation and voices (see kira and stellar\Camille and Four Murassame) (see corridinators\Cyber Newtypes) (etc etc etc) They kitted seed an insaine amount, the most notable ones would be the Freedom gundam (clearly a remake of the Wing Gundam Zero)

Then there is 00.  I will admit I havent seen it, but from the merchendicing, and what I have seen, it looks to me, like another seed 'lets make some cash' crap series.

And for those who dont believe my Signature...

im a UC kinda guy, original series 0079, 0080 and 0083. I really liked 0083 which was a shorter series and ground-based mecks.

there are tons and tons and tons of anime kits out there. Its hard to list it all here. Bandai made some decent Eureka7 kits, im still waiting on my resin Anenome, besides Eureke she's my fave from the series.

Good choice, the Zeta kits are nice.  There are a few issues with them.  The main one being they are transformable, so the inner frame is weak.  I have the 2.0 and it is weak, eh'...

So my suggestion, Open the sprue holes so you can snap and unsnap it easily (just drill the holes a bit, I stick an exacto in, spin it once or twice, and its good) snap it all together, find a pose you want, REMEMBER THAT POSE.  then glue it in position before painting.

The zeta kits have a habbit of sagging limbs and such.

I really hope you enjoy building it, and build more in the future my man.  If you want a recomendation for a second kit, that is a rather easy build but has some good detail and AMPLE opertunities for masking and such, try this.  It is one of my favorite kits.

http://www.gundamstoreandmore.com/ban923714.html

Also, check these two out, very very nice kits, the second has some amazing posibilities for Dio builds and detailing.

http://www.gundamstoreandmore.com/ban945936.html (thoguh, this one is slightly smaller then the other 1/100th scale (in the story they got smaller and faster by this era.) and has issue holding the heavier weapons without drooping, again, see glue in position))

OOHH OOHH I didnt notice you mention resin.

If you want a really, REALLY high end resin kit, check out

http://www.g-system-shop.com/

They do some of the best work, its expensive, but worth it.

I know its hard to not lead others to temptation on this site... but I must show you some of their products

http://www.g-system-shop.com/product_info.php?scale_id=9&products_id=53

Why is that so tempting and drool inspiring you ask?  Its 1/35th scale.

If I can ask, why are you using e2046?

That link isn't working.  If you live in the US, seriously, try using gundamstoreandmore.  And if you dont like them for window shopping, use http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/gundam/

I see I see.

Well, I can suggest that you can get those in other scales.

There is a 1/144 scale plastic Hyaku Shiki its alright, not amazing, but it isnt a bad kit.

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10008283 or http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10038298

There is a 1/144 GP03 Stamen.

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10020737

There is it seperatly, then there is the 1/144 version that comes with the Dendrobium Orchis.

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10023574 but its expensive, and massive.

And I can personally vouch for how nice the 1/144 scale Gundam Hazel Custom is http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10045163 It is an absolutley gorgeous kit.  Its one kit that I dont mind displaying, even though it is only snapped together.

i use E2046 for its line of original figs and quick shipping.  Also the boxes that E2046 come in cant be beat...Ihave several of thier heavy duty storage tubs that i use for other things,(each fig is packed in a tub)  thier resin is awesome.   I have shopped from pretty much all of the varous houses, and i really like the customer support from E2046.

Dustin on the resin figs do yourself a huge favor.  Go out and get a big flat file, not too rough, but at least one inch wide with a fairly smooth side. You will need it to true up the resin gundam parts. they dont always come out of the molds with sharp edges. One of our guys builds lots of resin gundams and upgrades and he always has this issue. you may also need to get some replacement ball and socket connectors if you dont pin them with tubing or wire.

its easy to get so excited to go out and get everything....just make sure to finish a couple. Gundams always take me a long time due to my masking and such. need to get back to that Zaku one of these days....after the Wappa

Im not in any big hurry to drop coin on resin gundam right now.  I would have to have a few kits under my belt.

I bought my kit from tower and i paid a little more but i needed paint and brushes.  Some of those places dont have those things.

Ahhhh.

Well, for resin, yea use that e#### (I forget the numbers) shop, its good for that, but for plastic try gundamstoreandmore.

If you want to get practice, working on some gundam kits, let me give you a few links to excelent 'practice' kits

http://www.gundamstoreandmore.com/ban72918.html

http://www.gundamstoreandmore.com/ban902407.html

There all good kits, there are alot of seams and they will take a good bit of work to look really good, but there worthwile kits, especially for the price, most likley under 50$ with shipping for all four (one is 2 kits in 1)

First, follow my instructions about opening the pegs.  Make sure everything fits together.  See what shows, what doesnt.  After that glue together that which doesnt show, and build the inner frame.  Fix the seams on the frame that are showing, and paint that much, if you paint the whole thing, there will be some fitting issues.  Put the armor on the kit, making sure that everying fits, and such, see what seams need fixing and which are suposto be there.  Take it off, detail the frame that is showing, then paint the armor.  Then afix the armor to the kit.
