Scratchbuilding question
Posted by SkullGundam on Friday, January 16, 2009 6:35 PM
Hey guys.  I'm stealing an idea I saw on Bakuc and making a valentines day SD Destiny for my girlfriend.  He comes with these cool hands spread open and I want to pose him holding up a heart or box of chocolates.  How can I make it?  Is there some kind of clay I can shape and bake it hard or something?  It needs to able to glue onto the hand too.

If at first you do succeed, try to hide your astonishment.

Hiya SkullGundam,

Why do you SciFi guys have such gruesome namesBig Smile [:D]

Back to the question. Theres a stuff available here in the UK called Fimo. Its a coloured one part putty that you `bake` in a warm oven to set.It comes in a wide range of colours and the idea is you mould a part - bake - add more - bake etc unti done, eg say you make the cake body in white, bake add detail, likkle flowers or somthing eqully feminine in pink, bake, add candles, bake and on till its done with a final bake to set.

Of course theres Milliput, a two part epoxy putty, where you mix equal parts together and it sets chemically. Comes in a small range of colours grey green, white, terracotta, black and superfine a silvery grey.

I dont know the model you mention or the scale but have a look in dolls house fittings, these are in mainly 1:12 and 1:24 scales but some bits are available in 1:48 and people make cakes, boxes etc for these, often out of the Fimo stuff mentioned above.

The other alternative that comes to mind is some of the detailing bits for 1:35 military by Verlinden and others. There are cartons, loaves and such stuff available and someone makes a childs doll and a teddy bear in this scale, cant remember who but some of these might help.

Cheers

Good idea.  I'm gonna check my hobby lobby for the doll house stuff.  Hey does anyone know if I could just coat one of those candy hearts with future to keep it from going bad?

Aves Apoxie Sculpt.  It's a two-part epoxy that has excellent working properties.  Most good hobby shops carry it and it's available online through many outlets.

Agreed. Aves Apoxy Sculpt. That stuff rocks.

Easy to use, sets hard w/out any special action on your part. Can be shaped or smoothed w/ sandpaper or files after it dries, and if you don't use all of it, the components are freeze/thaw stable, so leftovers can be stored in the freezer until needed. So awesome it should be illegal.

Can you tell I like it? Big Smile [:D]

Yes I can.  How long would I have to work it into the right shape?  I'm thinking of doing an open heart shaped box of chocolates, so inside I would want little mounds of chocolates.

An hour or so. It so easy to use that I normally get the shape I need fairly quickly, and then just let it set up for the next couple of hours. After that, I sand and shape it (if necessary).

For the basic shape of the box, have you considered using sheet styrene? You could just cut out the heart shapes, then use a thin strip or two for the walls of the box. Quick and easy.

Depending on how big you need the candy box to be, you could also search dollhouse websites for accessories. That seems like the sort of thing you could buy prefabricated for a relatively low cost.
