New to Si Fi Modelling
Posted by zapme on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 12:03 AM

Hi all, I am from the WWII aircraft modelling scene and have been wanting to build a Si Fi star ship, preferably Star Trek, which models would you guys recommend that would be a good place to start, I mean an easy build & paint.

Thanks Leo

I would recomend one of the polar lights 1/1000 reissues.  They are good, accurate, cheap and easy to find.  Very fun play things.

Just pick the one that is more your style.  Starshipmodeler is a good reliable site, I try to do all my business with them.

Hi Leo

there are a couple of ways to go about sci fi, too.

The super clean shiny white of Clarke's 2001 where all ships are pristine white and shiney

the slightly less perfect and somwhat used universe of Trek, or the grungiier used universes of

SW, Aliens and BSG. I love to play in all of these :)

Also, don't forget about (or become intoduced to,as reqiured) the world of Maschinen Krieger, what years ago before we knew any better we referred to as Nazis in Space.  Larger kits, made from other recognizable pieces, and very very armor!

here is a great resource for that fun universe:

hope this all helps

Welcome to the madness zapme. Cool [8D]

The Polar Lights Enterprise or Klingon D-7 are good first picks. Inexpensive, easy to build. The Klingon is the better kit in my opinion. Less seam work to get it in working order.

If you're into aircraft, there are also the Macross fighters:

and the Yukikaze fighters:

Have fun, whatever you choose. Big Smile [:D]

I have to agree that if you want to get into sci-fi & are looking at Trek for a build, you can't go wrong with one of the smaller Polar Lights kits.  And I say smaller as they also released 2 & 3 foot Trek ships as well.  They'll say snap on the box, but don't let that deter you.  They're just as complicated as any other kit.  Both kits will give you building options with different parts to represent different versions or allegiances.  The Enterprise kit can build up one of four ways (1st pilot, 2nd pilot, production & "Mirror Universe" versions) & the D-7 can be built up to be either a Klingon or Romulan version.

They're fun kits, a decent amount of putty work, nice decals & both kits are pretty much monochrome in paint schemes.  Don't forget to post some pics!

What the other fellas said!  Particularly Cosmic J and Prince with regards to the Polar Lights kits. Those PL Trek kits are pretty forgiving, plus relatively cheap and easy to find.

The AMT TIE Interceptor would be a great starter kit for sci-fi.Great parts fit and plenty of detail.
