Aliens Power Loader *WIP*
Posted by GlueItGood on Monday, February 2, 2009 6:13 PM

Here are a few photos of the Halcyon Power Loader from the film Aliens. I got inspired to do this after getting a lot of Alien models from *-bay. After starting the model I found a site (don't have the URL this second) where a modeler had seperated the wrist and ankle to make them articulated, giving the model a less static look.

I had already started the model by this time so I decided instead of just doing it OOB I would attempt to seperate not only the wrist but the elbow also. Below are a few photos.

This is an overview of the major parts. The right arm has been seperated at the elbow and wrist. I am also putting in a flasher unit to flash the warning light at the top (yellow bulb).

Here is a closer image of the work on the arm. Also all of the hydraulic actuators are being rebuilt for the arms. Not sure if I am doing the legs yet.

Here I have installed a switch in the right forearm to turn on and off the lighting (top warning light and a light on the inside of the roll cage). I have also given this arm a coat of the color I am using (Tamiya Flat Yellow - XF3).

Here is a close-up of the joystick which will act as the switch arm.

This last picture is of the arm together with some wash on the upper arm.

Thanks for looking and all comments/suggestions are welcome.

Agreed. Very nice so far. Thumbs Up [tup]

Is it going together well, or is it giving you problems?

Yes, WIPS are a bit of a tease but it also brings you back to see more and inspires the builder with your comments on the progress.

As far as how the kit goes together, it has a fair amount of seams and gaps to fill/sand but the overall fit and detail is good. It is a simple model with probably less than 50 parts and could mostly be snaped toghether without glue. I think the biggest problem is the figure of Ripley. She comes in two halves split along her side and the fit is poor, so there is a good amount of gaps along her side running the whole length of her body. My plan is not to use her and have the loader just posed standing on a floor, waiting for its next use.

I will have more pictures tonight as I had left my cameras at work last night.

Thanks for the comments.

Well, life has been busy. I did get a few hours in last night and am posting some of the work I was able to acomplish.

Here is one of the grippers in place on the hand. I have yet to even cut out the ones from the other side. Though now that I have one done the others should come quicker.

This is the right arm almost completed. The hydraulic actuator is a re-build that actualy works.

And here are the re-built actuators that run from the sholder to the bottom of the hydraulic control panel on the back of the loader.

I am hoping to get more time this weekend to sit at the workbench. Thanks again for looking.

Right arm, I mean, right on! This kit OOB does look stiff. Articulation will add action to this project.

I'll anxiously await the finished product!  Aliens is one of my favorite sci-fi flicks ever.  The scene with the loader is great!
