Ok guys I've touched up the VF-1D.  We can call it v1.2.  Like Smeagol the vile suggested the lines could be more pronounced so I gave it a panel wash.  BTW, this is the first time I tried doing a panel line wash over more than just one or two panel lines.  Its not great or anything but I think it turned out ok.

Also, I realized that I painted the spine behind the cockpit incorrectly.  The orange is supposed to go all the way back covering the entire spine.  In the pics above you can see that I originally painted it like the VF-1As and Js.

OT: Strictly speaking, the movie version "Super Ostrich" isn't a VF-1D, it's a VT-1. It has a "stepped" cockpit (rear seat higher than the front) and the "head" is different (and lacks guns). The Hasegawa kit is gorgeous.

Looks good!

Good to see I'm not the only one working on Macross kits.  I'm working on 3 different 1D kits right now ( partly so I have something to display at home as well as the LHS for the "launch year" in the Macross story, partly to make sure the mixed paints don't go to waste ).  From Hasegawa I have the TV version and the "Super Ostrich" movie version.  The third is the reissue of the transformable Bandai kit.

Sian,

Wow, the old ARII kit. those suckers were nasty.

Glad I'm not the only one who had that experience, though the Evangelion kits I got with the "Ben Di" instead of "Ban Dai" logos were worse.

I used a Pigma Micron .005 pen to do all the panel lines on mine.

You can still get them at Michaels.

Nice job on this clunker err, "classic" kit - the "fit" was more by coincidence by design, so you did a great job hiding the seams. I like the colour scheme on the "-D".

I built a bunch of these back in the 80's and still have a few more in the stash.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Yeah, I might try a panel line wash to give it a bit more detail.  I just painted on some Future to gloss it up.

I used Gunze Sangyo Aqueous Hobby Color Orange (H14) and Sail Color (H85), just as the directions called for.  My experience with Gunze was excellent.  The paint sprayed on very well and it didn't lift off with the masking tape, even when I "sheared" the tape off.  Model Master Acryl comes off with the tape all the time.  Plus the color is very deep.

This was really fun to build.  Only took a couple of days.  The VF-1D doesn't get much love.  All the love goes to the S and J models.

Looks nice.

I have a 1S (Roy's) that I need to finish, also have a 1S and a 1D in Battroid form I was modifiying for a scene at the beginning of the series ep 2 where Roy works on Hikaru's shot up ship.

All started in the early 80's.

Think I may have a few others as well in a box somewhere.

I also have a handful of the Macross model books and the Club Bandai books including the Macross Bible and a few "Do You Remember Love" books.

I have two of these in various stages of being built, there nasty little kits, the first one wont ever get finished because one of the head lasers got broken off.  The other I got bored with (the first was ready to be painted...)  I also have a bunch from that series in gerwalk mode.  You did a good job with it, though the pannel lines could be a bit more pronounced.

Hi everybody,

Here's my latest contribution to the Sci-Fi/Anime world.  It's the ARII Plastic Models 1/100 VF-1D Valkyrie from the Macross series.  This kits been in my closet for a while and I figured it was about time to get 'er done!

I will mount the weapons later.  Right now I think she looks good clean.  Here's a shot to put the size into perspective:

Here's the box art:
