I see - so the approach is to apply these aftermarket decals over a base coat. Thanks for responding. I had no idea how I would have painted or airbrushed those details.

IIRC there are at least a couple of "Aztec" (that paint pattern) decals made just for that model. A check over at the Star Ship Modeler store shows these:

There used to be a nice manufacturers website for the 1:350 version of this ship which showed the Aztec'ng in detail with color recommendations. Last time I tried to find it it seemed to have been removed at some point of the company "reorganizing", or such? Maybe someone else will chime in but that link might help you get started in researching too.

I just finished watching the entire fours seasons of this Star Trek series and am inspired to build this kit. Just for fun! Saw it a local Hobby Lobby store and I have a 40%-off coupon. Looking at the box art though, I was wondering how one would possibly approach painting the hull of this ship, afterall the kit is only 9" long. It looks like an NMF with lots of intricate gray patches. What painting approach would work best?
