Ok, so I went to see the highly raved about Avatar movie this last weekend and I will say that I was impressed with the CGI effects. The ships and VTO vehicles looked very, very real! The walking machines looked a bit jinky however. With the swagger of John wayne in a bar fight, rather than the fluid movment that of a high tech military machine. I was less than impressed.
That being said, I was wondering if anyone knows if someones making kits of this stuff? Yes, I would even build the over compensating macho man walking machine.
I just caught that today as well. While I haven't heard of any kits in the works, I kind of doubt anything but resin will be available for a while ( unless we have a reeeally delayed release like the Galaxy Quest kits ).
Maybe someone here with more patience than me will do a scratch or kitbash. I'm thinking a UH-1 would be a good starting point for those VTO's you mentioned.
Saw it this afternoon, and caught myself wondering the same thing. "I wonder if any kits will come out of this" and "how can I make that?"
I was in K-Mart afew weeks ago and saw some impressive Avatar toys including the walker and helicopter.
A good paint job and some weathering could only improve them.
I posed a similar question over at Hobbytalk's sci fi forum about whether there's any interest in any of the Avatar subjects...no replies as yet.
Interesting.
A number of years ago we would have seen the store sheves crammed with movie models months before the movie even hit the theater. I seem to recall that the Moonraker shuttle was out more than a year before the movie.
I picked up the toy helicoper (officially the RDA Gunship, or "Scorpion" gunship, according to the box), and it's of a decent size with lots of potential. I haven't looked into it in detail as far as what would be required to disassemble it, but it could be made into a decent replica with some effort, & it was worth the price (less than $30.00 at Wal Mart) I paid. I looked at the armored battle suit (known as an "Amp Suit") and it appears to be very good also. I don't do figures, so I passed on this one, but it has a lot of potential if it's your thing. Reasonably priced, too.
"no, honey, of course that's not another new model. I've had that one for a long time..."

Another sign of the decline of the hobby's popularity came up about 5 years ago. I remember after the Challenger was lost a lot of guys were wanting shuttle kits to build their own "tributes" and such to the crew. No such surge of interest came up after Columbia.
With the attitude of "lighting a candle instead of cursing the darkness" though, I'm trying to do something to keep things going. Both my son and to-be-stepson got kits they wanted for Christmas.
Surely someone will express an interest in kits based on this film...they did for the other James Cameron films, and those subjects still trade regularly (and at premium prices) on Ebay.
I'm sure something will come out eventually. Look at the upcoming Galaxy Quest kits. Better late than never on those.
But while I'm waiting, it's not like I'm short on kits to fill up my available hobby time.
Have you guys seen this one?

Not a kit and they want $1199 for it....
I know; it's a high priced collector's item, just thought it was a very well done model and that there may be hope for some of those in kit form (from someone, not necessarily from the same folks).
That "scorpion" gunship slightly out of context, but it sounded more like a helicoptor than a VTOL aircraft. The sound was too"slow".Otherwise I was very impressed with the movie. Great story and not only that its going to be a trilogy from what I've read.
