Color References for AMT USS Enterprise
Posted by rodc on Sunday, February 21, 2010 7:50 PM

Hi Guys,

My first sci-fi build is the Round 2 AMT Star Trek USS Enterprise.  Kit is awful......horrible ejector pin marks, flash, poor part fit.......I may actually call her the USS TAMIYA PUTTY.....ha, ha.

Just wondering if anyone has some color references for the kit?  There is no color suggestions on the scant kit instructions.  I guess I could always look for pics on the net but thought I would try here first!

BTW, anyone know what scale this kit is?  Finished it is about 18" long and I know it is not 1/350 since I also had the new 1/350 Polar Lights Enterprise in my hands at the same time I bought this one and that box is huge and heavy!  Must come with its own dilithium Big Smile

Thanks

I used Testors light aircraft gray on my Enterprise.  AMT's old classic is appx. 1/60.  Polar Light's small TOS Enterprise is 1/1000.  You say you bought a Polar Lights 1/350 Enterprise?  TOS?  Or is it the refit from the movies, or are you talking about the ship from the show Enterprise?

Hi Midnightprowler.  I never bought the Polar Lights Enterprise........only had a quick look at the box which was about 4X bigger and 10X heavier than the AMT Enterprise I bought.  Cannot even comment as to exactly what Enterprise the Polar Lights kit represented after seeing the $100 price tag.

The Enterprise I bought was this one: http://img.trekmovie.com/images/AMTBox.jpg

I always thought that the Enterprise was all white with some color accents but then again, the Light Aircraft Gray might be just enough off-white shade to make it look a little less toy-like!

That is AMT's original kit, which was first issued back in 1968, when the show was still on prime time original runs.  That kit was actually used on the show, as the damaged USS Constellation, in the episode, Doomsday Machine.  Gray is a correct color.  Polar Lights has dona a 1/1000 TOS Enterprise, a 1/350 refit Enterprise from the first Star Trek Movie, and a 1/350 Enterprise from the show Star TRek:Enterprise.  I have heard rumours of a 1/350 TOS Enterprise.  Would you be willing to go back to that hobby shop and see what kit you looked at?

Midnightprowler,

I just spoke to the lady who owns the local hobby store I deal with.  the kit is the 1/350 Polar Lights #808 which is NCC-1701A.  See link below:

The kit you are referring to is the re-pop of  classic AMT  TOS Enterprise which first appeared in 1968.  This is the best-selling sci-fi movie model of all time.  It  has it's share of problems- due more to it's age than anything- but can still look really good when built.  There is plenty of reference material out there as to the proper color.

Starshipmodeler website has the best and includes an article on the colors of the original filming miniature.

(Which was a light, concrete gray with a touch of green.)  The scale I think is about 1/650

The newer kits by Polar Lights of the Enterprise (i/1000 scale are excellent as is the big 1/350 ship.

Welcome to the world of AMT kits.  Don't let it discourage you from trying the other PL/Round 2 kits that aren't AMT re-pops.
