Affordable Lighting for the 30th. anniversary Viper from BG?
Posted by Sparrowhyperion on Friday, April 9, 2010 12:47 PM

Hi.  I know that CultTVMan is selling a lighting kit for the 30th. Anniversary Revell BG Viper kit, but at $29.95, its out of my budget.  Does anyone else have any suggestions or recommendations for an inexpensive alternative.  I am disabled and on a fixed low income so I have to be very budget conscious.

What about getting a few cheap book lights for parts and rewiring the LED's from them.

Try looking at the 99cent store.

Last time i was at the Dollar Tree they had a battery powered push light w/ 3 LED's.

Well, leds, cable and resistors are very cheap. You could check your local electronics store. Radioshack generally charges way too much for otherwise cheap components. There should be tutorials on the web and I could help you with a few calculations.

I found this site that  offer several options but I haven't bought from them: http://www.fiberopticproducts.com/

If you are not familiar with electronics and don't plan on lighting up the model for extended periods stick to batteries. It's safer than the wall outlet.

I went over to the Dollar Tree store today and they have book lights with a bendable wire neck and the lens is just under the size of the TOS viper but perfect for the Mk II,

I picked up what I thought was regular LED flashlight but they ended up having a regular bulb (didn't look close enough at the store) anyway the larger reflector dish will work fine for the TOS.

They also had a 3 LED touch light.

For a buck a piece you can't go wrong.

I recently bought some inexpensive LEDS and a strap switch from Model Train Software. I got their Fire set, 6 red LEDS and a battery connector/switch for like $20, including shipping.

For the Viper, you could just get 3 LEDs for the engines, and one for the cockpit display (which is clear, if I remember correctly), and the battery /switch for about  $15 total, shipping included.

The nice thing about these LEDs is that the resistor is already attached to them - no need for soldering. They're bright, come in several colors, and are super easy to use. I've actually considered getting another Viper kit just to wire it up w/ these.
