Back to the Future Part II Jeep model
Posted by dmc on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 11:44 PM

Greetings everyone.

I'm a Back to the Future fan, I've loved the films ever since I was little and I've enjoyed model building just as much. I specialize in mostly Movie & TV Vehicles as that is an enjoyable focus being a movie buff and collector. I came here as I would think that this forum would be the best to ask my particular question.

I have recently been wanting to model the more obscure vehicles from Back to the Future Part II, such as the super modified Ford Probes seen in Hill Valley, Flying Mustangs and Edsels. You name it!

So I've decided to kick off this entry with the Flying Jeep that Marty is Towed behind when on his Hoverboard. As a fan of the films for so long I have obtained some reference of this particular car in Hi-Res Continuity photo's that were used to ensure there weren't errors in production.

I have most things covered with this model, such as the "MagLev" attachments and various gizmos that were added, however if you have seen this car in the film you will note that it is covered with military stripes. My question to you guys, is simply, Which colors should I buy to match the 1:1 car?

I would appreciate some help in this department because, frankly. I have NO idea. :)

Thank you very much for reading!

Well, if your using Model Master enamels, that looks like Field Drab and Military Brown stripes over a Tan base to me.

I'm using Acrylics, Tamiya & Gunze. :)

Thanks for your recommendations though. I really appreciate it. :)

the colors appear fairly bright so i would try to avoid deeper militiary paint.

Tan or Sand looks to be your base color followed with olive and red- brown. The brown almost looks like Rust.

From seeing the one photo I would lean less towards camo and more towards tiger or zebra stripes in how to apply it.

also the driver appears to be wearing an AFV crewmans helmet repainted for the purpose.

not that Steve and Uncle George would repaint military surplus..nah.....

Cool, Thanks for your help! :)

I've not really masked this type of pattern before, so this will be a challenge. Would you recommend any masking products for this project?

if you have a good airbrush i would freehand it with low pressure.

If not, masking of almost any type wll result in a sharp edge. I use a ton of Poster Putty (white is my prefernce from hobby lobby). Knead the crud out of it and get it good and hot, thats when it sticks best and can be molded to shape best, use that for a mask too.

Wow, thank you very much. Your tips are very insightful.

I think I'll go for the putty method as you mentioned, so that I can make the shapes accurate. :)

Thanks!
