10 BEST Sci-fi kits?
Posted by SteelSnail on Monday, June 28, 2010 2:54 PM

smeagol started a very fun 10 worst sci-fi kits thread. But what about we pour some positive energy and talk about the goods that modern design and manufacturing has brought.

I'm sure Finemolds, Hasegawa, Kotobukiya, and even Moebius and GW (who IMHO have gotten better) will be mentioned.

Steelsnail! i love that name!

I have made up a couple of Finemolds kits in thier sci fi line and have been very impressed with them overall.

I am almost finished with the Kotobukiya PKO Hannibal, again an impressive piece in squint scale.

In the Bandia line, the later releases of the 1/100 Zaku blew me away with detail, finesse, attention to fit and finish and poseability with the complex skeleton.

I have to say I have been impressed w/Bandai's, PG Red Astray, I have not built it yet, just open the box, drool and w/shaky hands put the lid back on.  One of my favorite kits.  But heck I like all of the PG kits of which I now have three, the one above, RX-78-2 and the Titain II.  And they all are well designed. Thanks Ti4019.  I love it too Stick out tongue

I haven't build it yet but the 1/72 VF-1D from Hasegawa looks great and the photo-etched metal just add to it.

I have to say that I really enjoyed building GW Immolator. The plastic is thick, it's pricey and many details are lacking but it allows for many modifications and enhacements and the fit is great.

The Polar Lights 1/350 Star Trek kits are Sci-Fi modeling gems!

Any of the Gundam kits from Bandai, with every new release the kit is better then the previous ones.

For as simple as they are I absolutely love the Wave Ma.k kits.

I think I’m gonna like this thread. Cool

As stg says, the Wave MaKs are well worth looking into.

From the prices it commands on E-bay, I’d guess that the Finemolds Millenium Falcon has got to be freakin' awesome.

Some of my personal favorites are the Garasaki kits from Bandai, the "Raiden" and the "Shinden". Excellent engineering, excellent detail. They could use better hands though...

Right now, my vote for Best would go to the Zeon Mobile Scout, in Bandai’s UC Hardgraph line. It’s this delicate little hovercycle type vehicle – amazing detail, easily customizable. Fun to build, fun to paint, inexpensive, and looks great when finished.

Just finished the old Revell BSG Viper and liked it.

Not a lot of parts and the fit was pretty good considering the age.

See ya

All of the hard graph kits are top notch, not just the scout, though I have yet to get that kit.

I'm not a big fan of Gundam but certainly many hard graph kits have caught my eye. Although they have yet to caught my wallet, ha, ha, ha.

If you get the time and cash try them out.  Even if your not into giant robots there good kits, plus they do a top notch job of putting the mechanics in for the parts of the mechs, gundam has always tried to keep their stuff grounded in realism

Oh, a friend brought his to a club meeting and it is impressive. Good size, great detailing and lots and lots of parts. But in my opinion is not $500+ great as some prices at e-bay suggest.

I got the 1/144 Big Smile offering few days ago. It's very nice and will not eat all my shelf space.

If I didn't have a closet full of kits already, I'd snatch one of thse 1/144 Falcons up in a second. I got the old AMT kit, and I keep getting the urge to build the old girl, but every time I open the box that kit disappoints me.

The only other UC Hardgraph kit I have is the Hell Hound Hovertuck, from the Platoon Briefing set. Really nice kit, literally falls together. In fact, the only hassle it gave me was when I needed to separate some parts I had pushed together during test fitting. I hung a W.I.P. around here somewhere...

Haven't built it yet, but I have the 1/20 Scopedog Metal Spec from Bandai. Engineering looks amazing. if I could figure out where and how to display it, I'd start building it tomorrow.

Agreed. I've built a couple of those, both with and without the cockpit. Given a little TLC, they build really up real nice.
