I'm now a fan a Doctor Who
Posted by T-rex on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 11:53 PM

Funny really, I've seen a few episode of Doctor who before, but they never really seem to interest me, not until the recent new 11th doctor came along. Now I found myself waching every episode.

I'm not sure why I like it, I think its because unlike star wars and star trek, its really not a "serious" Show, I mean who really came up with this British show of a mad (but sometimes) funny time lord in a blue police box travel through time and space fighting pepper shaker robots (Darleks) and cyborgs (cybermen), and meeting the occasional historic figure like William Shakespeare, Wilson Churchill and Vincent van goth. As the longest sci-fi TV series, I"m surpirise its not a know as it should be but still, its a great show.

Not Surprisingly Airfix Kit with the 10th doctor with the Tardis has been a kit that I kept my eye on for a while now. But I don't like the pose of the character and the sound effect that come included. Its really just the Tardis that impresses me, Maybe I should put it in a dio as a parody.

Over this side of the pond, Doctor Who is a 'must see' for all geeks, & kids of all ages, & most kids have watched it from behind the sofa at some point in their younger lives....

It's run for so long averyone under the age of 5x-ahem has grown up with it.

It still runs because it doesn't take itself too seriously, it's genuinly funny & sometimes really scary! Devil

There have been so many doctors you can age people by which Dr they name first, ( just like the girls in the Bond movies, Ursula undressed or Halley's Berries, Stick out tongue)

Tom Baker is my all time favorite Time Lord.

Those episodes are worth checking out.

Does naming Tom Baker as my favorite (should I say favourite? Big Smile) as well make me sound old???

I've been a big fan of the original series for some time though I've only seen maybe a third of them. I like most of the original Doctors - well except for the last few seasons with McCoy as the 7th Doctor were pretty awful- not McCoy himself just aweful scripts.

I loved the new show at first but frankly really didn't like the 4th season and stopped watching it. Haven't seen the 11th Doctor but I'll have to give him a try.

I don't know about the poses but I thought the molding quality on the figures with the TARDIS set were some of the best I've ever seen with mass market kits. And plus Martha is the only companion on the new show I've liked so I'm happy they went with her instead of the annoying Rose or Donna.

I've also been enjoying the current ( US ) broadcasts though the dependence upon outfitting characters with full head covering masks almost every show is sometimes a bit too repetitive.

The script for "Blink" was a very nice change and "Partners in Crime" had a novel method for removing excess body fat Big Smile

Sure would be nice to have a Tardis model with a detailed interior Stick out tongueWinkStick out tongue

My teenage son has suddenly become a big fan of this show using his X-box online and Netflix instant view... now I need to introduce him to the original Star trek thru the same method.

I have been watching the old tom baker episodes.  There so hard to watch, the effects are horrible and there are so many plot holes its not funny... but there still good

watched genesis of the daleks, they shot davros, if you get shot by a dalek you die, yet he doesnt? and comes back later? WTF

Personally, david tennant is and always will be my doctor, as will john simm be my master

Tom Baker for me as well but before him was Peter Cushing.

There are several sites for building your own full scale TARDIS.

"Doctor Who" has always been a favorite. Used to watch Tom Baker epsiodes in the evening before the ABC news in Australia in the 80s. Tom is still my fave, but Tennant is a close second. Still have a soft spot for the old shows but the writing on the new incarnation is terrific. I haven't had a chance to see the new kid, but fellow fans seem to like him.

Jelly baby?

I have watched this show for 25+ years and enjoy whoever is the current Doctor. Of course in the 1980s and 1990s we were seeing 10 year old shows on PBS. I was really excited to see it come tp Sci-Fi and BBC America back 5 years ago.

I wish they would show the old ones, maybe start at 1963 and run all the episodes in order.

I am on the look out for these Airfix kits, but they only made 2 in a series of 4. Sales were not to great so they canceled the last 2. It is hard to find the first 2, eventhough they are just a few years old. They only sold them in Britian.

Comet Miniatures has reissued their old dalek kit from the '70s. I think it's over-priced but picked up the TV version anyway:

http://www.comet-miniatures.com/browse.php?s_categ=35&zone=11&

And they do stock the dalek  kit from the new series. I picked up it and the TARDIS from a US webstore and was really impressed by the quality:

http://www.comet-miniatures.com/browse.php?s_categ=175&zone=11&

Afraid the only cybermen I've seen is the pre-painted pre-assembled stuff. You can repaint them if you want but they're pricey:

http://www.comet-miniatures.com/browse.php?s_categ=175&zone=11&

http://www.comet-miniatures.com/browse.php?zone=12&s_categ=175&

I really like the Tom Baker pre-painted figure...

I've ordered from Comet before and found them a pleasure to deal with and shipping to the States not too expensive. Of course with a websearch and you can probably find someone that stocks the items in your own country if you're not British.

Also Black Tree Design does an extensive line of gaming figures in 28mm with so-so detail:

Cult TV Man has the 2 Airfix kits

Although for the price you would be better off just scratch building a TARDIS yourself.

I've seen some really nice 1/6 scale models done that even light up.

Great season finally this weekend. I would like to see a kit with all the updated enemies in episode, like the colorful Dareks. also a doctor with the fez.

I dunno, it felt... really anti climactic, the end of the universe, the doctor locked way then all of a sudden like magic hes out.  That one didn't sit well with me, hell the master held onto him for a year and conquered earth before he was able to do anything about it

That is true, A TARDIS could easily be scratch build, after all it is just a box, with a mad man inside.

David is indeed a great doctor, but Matt is making a good reputation, And I've seen a few episode with Christopher Eccleston, he's pretty good too.

The first doctor i recall seeing is Jon Pertwee, but only just. Like alot of people, Tom Baker was my favorite from the classic series. By the time McCoy came along i had lost interest. But i have really enjoyed it again with these last two Doctors, but looks like we could be looking for a 12th soon. Its already been suggested that Matt Smith is ready to move on, seems its a good leg up to better things.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

I got hooked on this gammy sci-fi before people even knew what sci-fi was while stationed in Germany in the early 70's.  Regardless of who plays the part, my fondest Dr. Who was Peter Cushing, there were several movies before a TV show.  Boy I would love to get ahold of a Airfix or any for that matter of the evil machine/aliens that would go on to conquer the Earth! I believe there was a vac'd kit too.  Anyhow, I know the show is silly @ times, and surely no ones compares to real life, even if the show is based on Good vs Evil and good does not always win, still it is a classic show that has stood the test of time!  Glad you posted this, just watched this on BBC.

I first heard about the Dr in junior  high school (1967)  from a freind who was from Liverpool. He was always raving about it (sounded kinda goofy to me, some old white haired dude or a Moe Howard lookalike chasing around after trash cans).

I got hooked when PBS began showing it in the 80's. I've found that ones favorite doctor tends to be the one that you are watching when you start to get hooked on it. Mine was Tom baker. Can't stand Colin Baker!!!

The Cushing and McGann doctors give fits to those that want a more orderly Who universe without asterisks. Especially the Cushing Dr.

The TV show  (teleplay) came before the movies. The Cushing movies were just basicly retelling the TV episodes.

Ill agree and disagree with you on your statment.  Most people I know got hooked on tom baker and such because thats when they first started watching, but he was good, very good.  I have started watching those old episodes, there hard to watch but he plays the part perfectly.

when I started watching and was hooked was with the new series, with Christopher Eccelson.  I like his doctor, I appreciate it more when I rewatch the episodes though, to see the little quirkeness that I missed.  That being said, David Tennant is my favorite doctor.

I don't have a favorite doctor ( actor ) as the scripts are the reason I watch.

Good acting can't hold my attention if the script is bad.

The Dr Who episode "Silver Nemesis" would have been interesting with Manny playing the role of De Flores.

That certainly would have been worth a "Manny Award". Stick out tongue

Definitely !

I also enjoyed that episode;  makes me want to buy some brass bar and sheet stock and make clocks,,,Stick out tongue

Most recent episode broadcast on PBS in my area was The Fires of Pompeii...

I was somewhat perplexed that scriptwriters took the trouble to set a reasonably accurate AD 79 backdrop but Pompeii was given Herculaneum's fate in the script and computer graphics showed a pyroclastic surge engulfing  Pompeii

Oddly, one scene showed the correct initial white pumice.

OTOH, the new house god shrine was amusing.
