MPC ShuttleTydirium
Posted by cairnsy01 on Saturday, September 4, 2010 7:47 PM

G'Day All,

Just started the MPC Shuttle Tydirium, It is suprisingly large. It's not a bad kit for it's age a bit of warpage a few chunky parts and plenty of flash but that's to be expected from these kits I suppose. My biggest drama though is the instructions are a little vague when it comes to colours... So what is the actual colour of these white, grey, other??? And any of the smaller colours if you can give me a rough estimate on them would be excellent.

Cheers

Is this a science fiction model or a actual NASA space shuttle?

It's the 3 winged Imperial Shuttle from Star Wars that Darth Vader and Co used to get about in.

when i had mine,  about 1/4 century ago,  i painted it light gull gray.  i air brushed it, and used black for detailing.   a couple of coats of gloss sealer,  then install the smoked window, and shelve it.   post the pics

Here is a build I did, its the Revell Version but the colors worked well for me.  I used
Model Master Acryl Light Gray , but I darkened it up with Washes.

Its in Japanese but it is the best build of the Kit I have ever seen.  He used Tamyia paints but I am not sure what color.

Actually, no it won't! This is after you've weathered it. If you're going for the true look of the shuttle Tyderium - (dare I say this for the sake of argument), your weathering on the dorsal wing is too heavy.  I'm guessing that you weren't going for perfect accuracy, but an alternate take on it. I like this with the darker accents on the body, and the nose of the cockpit.

REEFER WHITE is what you want to use for any Star Wars themed model. This is the closest that you'll find in Tamiya colour. I don't know what it is for other paint makers, as I usually mix my own.

Depends whether you weather it as Darth's/Emperor's shuttle or one of the others around the universe. Darth's seemed to be near mint condition.

Not really, since the Emperors' shuttle was the same one that Darth Vader arrived in as well. This was the same stage prop, and the model was the same way. Both were one of a kind - meaning that they didn't make two of each one. There was no need since there wasn't a fleet of these. The model wasn't this dirty, so it'd match the life sized stage prop. Most of the weathering washed out from the stage lights any way. Reefer white is the proper colour for ALL Star Wars vehicles in white. This is only slightly off-white in colour, with a touch of gray to it. It matches the reference photos of the Millenium Falcon perfectly. This was an automotive paint used for cars originally, but the colour can be matched once established. Meaning that you can go to your local paint jobber, and have this mixed to the original colour, even if you don't have a colour code, just a paint chip.  This is cheaper in the long run than having to keep buying tiny jars of it premixed.  I just mix my own primer to it, then spray out of an airbrush, or paint gun.

Sorry Chris, but you are mis-informed regarding the Shuttle Tydirium.

The Tydirium is a Lambda class shuttle that is a common cargo and troop transport ship used mostly by the Empire. The Tydirium was stolen and used by the commando force to insert onto the planet Endor.

There is no reference to either the Emperor or Vader using this shuttle, as they had there own personal versions modified for them. The Emperors shuttle had upgraded weapons, upgraded shields, personal quarters and a cloaking devise was rumoured. Vaders had a meditation chamber so he could remove his helmet/armour.

The shuttle above looks great, and the weathering is realistic.

I've built 2 of these over the years.  The first was so long ago that I didn't even think it needed paint.

The last one was about 15 years ago and I used FS Light Gray ( I forget the number ) for the base color.  If I ever make another, I might use a 50/50 mix of the Light Gray and Flat White.

Photos of actual studio model

Studio Scale fan build

Another Studio Scale Fan build

Do and image search (google) and lot's of photos taken at various Magic and Myth locations should yield tonnes of reference material for you There are also photos of when the models and props where at the Smithsonian.

The crew at ILM was quite fond of using Floquil model train paints on the models.

Same models and set pieces where used for all shuttles in the movies, there where no special models or sets made for different scenes with different characters.

I have seen the original studio prop in person and it is a light gray shade. The rear engine is illuminated by a neon tube. I have this kit and plan on building it soon.

BTW Goodness180, the wing cannons on your model are wrong. They go the other way around. Don't worry, I've seen this happening even with the Hasbro Toys.

Actually, I'm not! I wasn't referring to the "Extended universe" - they only had ONE shuttle to film for the lifesized prop, and ONE studio scale model to which I was referring. They are painted to match each other since they didn't build a fleet for filming purposes regardless of later stories that would come out after the filming of the movies. The only shuttle stolen by the rebels in the movie - was LUKE SKYWALKER. Most of these comic books are incorrect as are a few of the books as they don't follow the original story lines (script) of the original Star Wars movies. I understand what you're trying to say, but in this thread it's unrelated to the conversation at hand. We're only discussing the paint job - not so much story lines in comics, or books.

The same shuttle filmed with Vader was the same one that the Emperor used in filming. The model of the shuttle was one, and only one - no other was ever built for filming, there was no need to. This was simply the point I was making - not start a pissing match. Division6 was making the same point.  Whatever story was concocted later is not in play here - just the original story of the movies, and the paint of the filming/stage  models. Notice more than one Lambda class shuttle in the movie? No - not on the Death Star. The filming model was superimposed upon itself for shots in scenes of more than one - these were composite shots used to make it look like more than one was used, when in fact it was the same model over, and over. This was easier than making more than one for filming. They even made filming mistakes with Red 5 in Star Wars being shown more than once in the same scene as Red 4 when the rebels were attacking the Death Star, but this went unnoticed at the time. There were a lot of editing mistakes in the first movie - beginners/amatures is my guess. It was later used purposely when discovered that unmarked vessels could be used again for other shots of more than one vehicle - IE: TIE figters. Only two were used in the filming for various shots in Star Wars, but one was made as a pyro for scenes where they were shot.

This happened a lot more than most people will ever know, or notice without a descriminating eye. The best way is to look at the movies themselves, and old cinifantastic magazines, or other magazing articles were they discuss what happened during filming. Sculpting a galaxy is written by Lorne Peterson - the ILM modelshop manager forever. He was there from the beginning to the end. There are fantastic pictures in there of the studio models, and the history surrounding them. Many mysteries are also uncovered in this book. It's a great read, and one of many that I recommend for any Star Wars, or sci-fi fan. The Star Wars chronicles is great too, but full of misinformation, and incorrect descriptions (old english) that was used, but the pictures are great, and give the average reader a lot of information. The are a couple others that escape me at the moment, but look for these at your local book store, or online for more information. You'd be amazed at the volume of pictures, and stories included in each of these.

I just ordered this model and I love the detail work you have done on yours.  I have seen a few LED lighting kits, mainly flashing running lights and blue rear exhaust.  Do you have any recommendations on any of these kits?
