Manstein's revenge

I like it...one thing that you may consider to give it a little more "action and movement" is to stretch some clear sprue and tint it red-orange and try to replicate a "shot" being fired from the wounded troopers weapon by attaching it to the end of the muzzle...

Thanks Manny! You know what? The thought to do that actually crossed my mind but I wasn't sure how it would look or if I could pull it off. I'm aware of issues people have with even recreating fire and smoke and making them look realistic, and I didn't want to fall into the same trap.

Kugai, that's what I was hoping for, a little humanization. Well, I've always thought the movies were a little ambiguous on how they portrayed the Troopers. Obviously, in the original 3 you never know they are clones, that piece of the story isn't filled until the newest trilogy was released. Of course, in the original trilogy there is little remorse shown for dead Troopers and little care given, aside from moving the dead ones aside to make way for Lord Vader in A New Hope. One the other hand, it doesn't mean they are incapable of caring for each other either, it simply isn't that important for the bigger picture in the movies.... Your last sentence is certainly one way of interpreting it, in which case, the human element is still present, but from a more sinister or perhaps morbid angle.

One of the "little things" I like about this build is how it "humanizes" the clones by showing some aspect of loyalty to someone in the same unit.  You wouldn't think one would be helping the other in the field to this extent since they were not much more emotional/social than their droid opponents and the Republic apparently saw them as expendable soldiers taking the place of "real people."

Of course, I guess the guy doing the pulling could just see the wounded clone as just being there to cover his 6 til he eventually bleeds out...

Thanks guys, I'm glad the drama and pain are some what tangible, if you will. Speaking of blood splatter, I've often thought of doing a sort of intentionally over the top, tongue in cheek zombie style diorama where the hoards of undead are clashing with survivors. Haven't gotten around to it yet but its something in the back of my mind for a future project.

Thanks again for looking and commenting!

Hey Jon, it looks awesome! Great job on painting and posing and I like the human element you've added to the STs. Plus the blood really works, a little like this gets across the idea of the guy being wounded. I think when people object it's mostly to having blood splattered everywhere like a Sam Rami splat-stick horror/comedy movie.

Hey, I finally finished this up in time for Christmas. I presented it to my brother in law, a huge Star Wars fan and he was quite pleased with it, as am I. As you can see, I changed the ground work from being urban, or in a space ship to out side, on a desolate planet some where...

You may or may not be able to see, I dirtied up the troopers a bit and cut the poor battle droid to pieces. I also gave a few wounds to the trooper being dragged. I'm aware that blood isn't always in good taste but I felt it was OK here, being more of a sci-fi theme. It also adds a little more human drama, which is what I was going for here. Hope you enjoy it as well...

Comments and criticism is welcome indeed....

Boba Fett

I assume you plan on it, but that trooper is just screaming for a blaster crater in the brestplate.  That, or maybe in the right calf.

Oh you know it, bro! Initially I was just going to put it in the breastplate but given the pose I thought it would be prudent to put some damage on his right leg...so I'm going to do both.

Thanks for commenting and I hope you follow along. Not sure if most people consider this legitimate modeling or not but whatever, I'm going to have fun with it.

I'll have to dig out my Brothers in Arms figure and see what I can do with it some time. Did you ever see the thread I did on the Joker action figure? If not, check it out: This was the first - and only so far - action figure redo I've done. Didn't change much, just repainted it.

Gotcha. In that case, it looks good.  I assume you plan on it, but that trooper is just screaming for a blaster crater in the brestplate.  That, or maybe in the right calf.  The other thing is, I bet those things cost 25 cents in a factory to produce somewhere in  China... Darth George is killing us with licensing.  That brothers in arms figure is pretty fantastic for what it is. All the clothes sag realisticially, it just takes a lot of putty to blend everything together. If you're bored, I'd recommend it. The face is very well-done, I've been using him as a basis for some figures of my own. Got Kal Skirata lying around somewhere... maybe I should dig him up and finish him.

Thanks for weighing in Fett. To be honest, I've never figured out why Fett is my favorite, considering his limited role in the films. Must be his looks...he's just a BA lookin' dude.

I agree some what that the standing trooper is a little stiff. But believe me I tried to manipulate him in different poses and unfortunately, the range of movement for these characters is less than ideal. I could cut them up and reattach them but I'm pressed for time and since this is a gift, I didn't want to destroy it beyond repair. Also, like you said, they're expensive. These were $10 each at Kohls. Should have bought them at Target where they were $7. Oh well.

I think the idea of drawing fire works for me though. The scene is suppose to be dramatic, hence the guy being dragged holding his side arm to cover the retreat. I think it may look better once I get the blasters into their hands.

I also think I have the same promo figure from Brothers in Arms stashed away some where.

Again, thanks, glad you like it.

Fett is your favorite character? Ohhhhh yeah baby! (guess who I like?) I thought about doing this too, except with Republic Commandos. I couldn't decide whether I wanted to do Delta or Omega squad though. Plus it was too expensive for me.  I like the poses, but the one dragging the 501st trooper looks a bit "wooden". If I were you, I would pose him bent over more, or using the second hand on something else. Holding a blaster like that is inaccurate, and he's going to draw a lot of fire. But it still works. I can't wait to see this complete! I'm currently modding a promo figure fomr Brothers in arms Hell's highway a friend sold to me for $3. After filling in the joints and grinding down some of the clothing detail, he looks super. Action figures are greatly under-utilized...

Star Wars Storm Trooper Vignette...FINISHED
Posted by oddmanrush on Monday, November 29, 2010 10:26 AM

Hi, I don't venture in here often although I do have an incomplete WIP of Slave I lurking around that should hopefully be done by Christmas.

This new project should be done by Christmas as well. It better be, its a Christmas present for my brother in law who is as much a Star Wars fan as I am.

Here is just the beginning:

Clearly not much to look at yet though you can get a taste for what is going on. All the figures are action figures that I'm going to spruce up. As of right now, all the joints are glued in place so they won't move out of the position I have them in now. I will have to putty the joints to make them solid and less action figure-like. A little fresh paint and some battle scars will help as well.

Storm Troopers, along with Boba Fett, are my favorite characters in the Star Wars saga. They look mean and cool even though they can't hit the broad side of a barn. Any way, through out the movies the troopers are cast in a less than glorious light so I wanted to make a vignette that added a little human drama to some otherwise "lifeless" characters.

Hope you like the idea and stick around for the finished product. Comments and criticism welcome!
