OK so all you sci-fi guys (star wars anyway) are probably gonna look at me as a total noob here. But i was looking at the AT-AT and i cant figure out how it deploys troops to the battlefield.
Its all very well and good having something that massivle and powerfully armored. But when they reach the front lines and it comes to deploying the troops. what do they do? Theyre 50 feet in the air. Does it kneel down? thus making itelf vulnerable to attacks to the upper surfaces. Do they jump? and risk breaking limbs as they land? Do they egress from the legs? They seem too narrow for this.
Just yeah, makin my head spin a lttle trying to work this out.

Scorpiomikey Does it kneel down?
Does it kneel down?
That is exactly what they do. Picture a camel kneeling down. Same thing. Then the large side panel opens and I believe a ramp extends to the ground allowing troop and vehicle movement.

Troops can also rappel down from the side openings for quicker deployment.
Seems like it would make if vulnerable to me. Oh well. Thanks oddmanrush.
I always presumed for safety reasons they exited the rear oval hatch ....

In the Empire, functionality must come second to awesomeness.
(I want to know how they get down to the planet in the first place...and why the Empire doesn't provide any close air support...poor tactics, guys)

i assume they fly them down in the belly of a drop ship like they did in the prequels.

Ah! Robot Chicken FTW!
Either the walker kneels down, and the troops deploy out of the side, or they fast-rope down. Either way, very impractical. But hey, those things look FRIGGIN AWESOME! The empire places form over function.... probably why the rebs won.
The soldiers come down on lines. Winch and pully sort of thing, grip on, slide down the line.

No more vulnerable than if it came across a squadron of snow speeders armed with tow cables...........
Doubting the genius of Sir Lucas will not win you any points...same logic of the AT-AT as it was to fly right at the emprial fleet when leaving Hoth rather than flying to the other side of the planet or any where else except right at them.

Yeah i lost faith in "Sir Lucas" after jar jar binks *shudders*
Well, Darth George had my support most of the way... though the prequals were terrible. I completely lost it when clone wars aired... and ESPECIALLY when the mandalorian episodes came! (I am a true Fandalorian... Karen Traviss > Darth George) Jedi fan I am not.
sorry, but my mind is always thinking that way
