Colonial Viper
Posted by Chrisisall on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 8:39 PM

Hi! My first post here as a member & not a lurker.

I wanted to get a critique on my Viper, as well as explore other peeps SF stuff.

I made this Viper & a display for it:

Then I realized that many inaccuracies still remained, so I made this:

Any thoughts or criticisms would be appreciated.Toast

"Critique"...?  How about "great"... really it's a terrific build. Nice details and your display is totally cool.

I love the vipor, it's a favorite build. You've made it more clean, some go for much more damage. I envision yours as being just before the war breaks out and it's still in good condition :)

Your landing bay really sells it!

well done Yes

It's 1:32- the Revell model, heavily re-worked.

I did a dirty one recently, but it seemed SO dirty... I was going for a blend of the relatively clean full-size mock up & the heavily dirty filming miniature, in essence, what it looked like on screen in the FX shots. Man, the filming miniature was *really* dirty, heh heh.

I did a wash for some panel lines near the guns, but mostly it the gray model colour showing through.

The cool thing about my landing bay display is that I can place any Viper I make onto it; the landing gear is actually part of the floor, not attached to the model:

Thanks! I painted the shadows so that no mater how the display is lit, there are always at least 2 shadows under the Viper & flight deck person,  adding to the illusion of depth.

Isn't it cool??? It's a Joyride toy I got on Ebay last month for $10!!!! He falls over a lot, so I made a black faux-shadow base to epoxy him to, also had to paint his arms & gun a bit, but he is SWEEET!

Go to Ebay, but usually they go for $30 or more, I found it listed as a Cylon Figure, not a Cylon Centurion- that's why I was the only bidder, I conjure.

Thanks! It took me a few to get the Viper just right:

The one in the center front I made in 1980. I hacked out the windows, added in a built up pilot & glued in window panes; crude, but pretty good for a kid. The ones on the left & right I made a couple of months ago, and turned out nice, but the three in back that I JUST made came out perfect.

Colour me a Viper nut.Stick out tongue

The Viper is my favourite one man vehicle, followed by the Mig-31, which I see at the bottom of your posts. I really want to build an accurate Firefox soon, all I've done up to now is this toy-like kitbash of other planes:

I've seen this build someplace else, but this is rocking! I love the vipers - I see that you're making a fleet. I'd just buy one off feebay, and recast it. It's cheaper that way, and you don't have to worry about size differences, or details between other manufactureres IE: Revell, Monogram.  The sex change is amazing! You'd never know it if you just looked at it as a casual observer - I can't stop laughing, and noticing how much a little cutting can make a huge difference. Your eye for detail is great! I take it that the wood base is balsa for ease of cut, and build. The landing gear is too cool! Are those also scratch made, or kit parts.

Maybe a picture of a squirrel playing a harmonica will make you feel better?

Thanks! The gear is scratch- I won't buy what I can fabricate!

I'm actually fine tuning the display & the Viper I made for it right now! Little details can mean a lot...

I felt I had to rework the Viper in my display/diorama since I developed so many good techniques on my newer ones... then I figured I'd tweak the display itself just a tad. So first, I made a tiny viper to put in the background:

Then I worked the big Viper (new pipes, exhausts, dirt, removing intake ridges...), & added some depth to the left wall:

Crappy camera here, I apologize for the lack-O-resolution!
