TrekModeler.com does a couple of lighting kits for the 350.

I've chatted with quite a few people who had very good success with the kit. All the correct lights flash at all the right sync rates and you can switch from Impulse to Warp drive.

I didn't. Mine quit working half way through the build. I'm not sure how but I got it working agian, then towards the end half of it quit working agian but it was all sealed up and no way to fix it. It was my first light project so I was also in a bit over my head with zero experience.

but as I said... MANY people have told me very good success stories with his light kits.

Cheepest.... that I don't know.

I am a lil curious, what sort of lighting are you looking for? Mains voltage or battery? or mains stepped down to low voltage (l.v.).

If I was lighting ANYTHING for a night light I would use LED's and prefferably run off of batteries or LV battery pack for safety. I would go LED for long life, low drain low temperature (so as not to burn daughter or melt kit).

LED's are easy to work with, come in a variety of colours and last for ever, couple these with a cheap controller and you can have them flash or dim pulse whatever you require.

They are pretty cheap, well at least down here in NZ they are, running to 30 - 40 cents each plus a handful of resistors etc.

Be interested to see where you end up.

Cheers

leds for sure

low voltage using a mains transformer would be best thats the easy bit the bit i need to know is what electronics do i need to wire it all up

if you send me an email? pm? however it works with the details I will help design the circuit for you.

Basically you need to know how many leds you want, what output voltage your mains transformer will be (around 6 - 9 volts D.C. is best), whether you want anything fancy like timers or flashers etc. Then depending on the transformer/LEDs you will need a switch, one resistor per LEd and the LEDs of course.

Anyway let me know if you need a hand to put it together.

I have four of these models, keep researching various ways to build, light , finish them etc. If you came up with anything lighting wise I'd be very grateful! I have bought leds but have been too scared to start on anything! I also have an arduino as I thought that might be one way of ensuring the lighting was impressive. I've seen so many well finished Big E's on these forums and I'm jealous.

Can't really afford to buy the trekmodeller lighting kit as it's quite expensive,

Thanks in advance.

While it isn't good for the blinking lights, Easy LED is super-easy for doing the windows and (possibly) the warp engines. It's a self-adhesive "tape" of LEDs that can be cut in 3-LED sections.

Truth in advertising - this is my product. I'm definitely NOT an unbiased spokesperson ;)

P.S. This item is mentioned in the Spotlight of the July issue of FSM on page 13. I'm really stoked!

I am curious, what is the maximum number of LED's (length of tape?) that can be run off a 12vdc 250ma power supply?

Great question.

I've got to compile that info. I've done two sets of 60cm with my 300ma power supply without a problem, but I need to go through my specs and double-check the current draw to know what the maximum truly is. I'll add that to my instructions and web page.

I do know that 5m is too much for my power supply Wink

you could get a good psu connect whatever to it then measure the current draw using an ameter/multimeter
