I was less impressed with Super 8. It was a double feature at the Drive-In playing with XMen: 1st Class. Both were kinda dull. But this year for movies hasn't been good. Green Lantern and Thor were also not great.
Dull how? I loved Super 8. The kids' performances are what won me over. As for X-Men, I think it's done a better job than any of the previous X-Men movies. It's funny, but I think the absence of a strong Wolverine helped it from being "Wolverine and Friends", and I really dug the 60s setting, the focus on the characters, and the Charles/Eric bromance.
Thor wasn't great, but wasn't bad. In my opinion Chris Hemsworth is the only reason the movie worked. It was a house of cards all balanced atop his charisma, and he made it work. Boggles me how the guy does that...but he also made the first fifteen minutes of Star Trek one of the more powerful intros to a movie I've seen in some time...so it was nice to see that wasn't just a fluke.
I haven't seen nor do I plan to see Green Lantern. Just zero interest.
For the rest of the summer, I'm seeing Transformers 3 Friday (I grew up in the 80s and basically learned about death by watching Optimus bite it and ACTUALLY DIE in the 1986 movie, so my seeing it was never in question...).
Harry Potter 7.2 looks fantastic. 7.1 was in my opinion the high point of the series to date. Giving the story essentially double the time really let it breathe, and worked to everyone's favor, especially after what I thought was a rather disappointing #6.
I was very "meh" on Captain America until I saw the super bowl trailer. Since then, everything I've seen, I want to believe. I really like Joe Johnston as a director, but I don't think he's ever just completely nailed a movie. The buzz I've been reading though is that reactions to early screenings are just through the roof. We'll see, but I'm hopeful.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes also looks like it might be interesting, but I want to wait for some reviews before I make up my mind on that one.
Next summer's what I've got my eye on, though. The Hobbit, the next Chris Nolan Batman flick, Pixar's BRAVE.
