Klingon K'Tinga Cruiser
Posted by NucMedTech on Sunday, August 21, 2011 3:09 PM

Hi Everyone, I completed this awhile back just never got around to getting pics of it. A departure from the normal color scheme. Had done the BOP and Vorcha in the green so I wanted something different. Coud be a Training ship if the klingons have those or a special operations unit. Give me some suggestions. Anyway let me show you what maddness I have wrought.

Hope you like it, but let me know what you think, good or bad (just not rude LoL)

Well, I didn't see the photos 'till now.

I'm not certain if the paint job matches a movie version but it looks like neat work and the planet base is a nice touch.

I have one of those kits in stash.

What did you think of the kit and how it was designed to be assembled?

Actually, I'm kinda surprised the kit hasn't melted.

From what I'm hearing it's hot as hades in Texas.

Hi Sprue-ce, Thanks for taking a look. The scheme is not from any show or movie that I'm aware of, The kit itself went together relatively easy, It will require some filling and sanding, most of these, I'm finding,do. Nothing to hard to handle though. All my stuff is kept in the garage and at 104 +/- a few degrees, nothing has melted yet. However it does limit my build times from 6am to about 9am on the weekends.

SLW, glad you like it. Had to do something other than the Klingon green or grey.

I don't know if it matches a movie paint job, but I like it.

It looks good having some color and not just one solid.

well done

An excellent job, it doesn't matter if it matches the movie or not. The world of Star Trek has vast areas of unknowns so traning ships of different color combinations could very well be concidered. you never know when something gets cannonized into the story line. The internet world of Start Trek stories is all over the place. Excellent job, Magoo

Looks to me like 'The Motion Picture' K'Tingas with a little improvation. And yeah, from some of what I've seen different Klingon houses might have different markings on their ships.

Really sharp job! I built one back in high school and remember it's probably one of the better AMT/Ertl kits with pretty good fit and detail.

I love it!

I built one 20 years ago for a friend that eventually stiffed me for $700.

I wish I would have kept it.

Gerry and Mr. Magoo(loved that character), Thanks for lookng in. Knew this wasn't an authorized (for lack af a better term)scheme when I was painting it. Originaly had it painted grey with contrasting shades of, you guessed it, grey. Didn't like how it looked so figured I'd repaint it something different. As always appreciate the comments.

Gamera, I thought about different houses having different colors but wasn't sure how far off they would go. thanks.

TD,glad you like it. You know these are pretty easy and most times cheap on evil-bay. It's where I got this one, You should build another one for yourself.

Hi Rob, I appreciate your honest opinion. Like I said, I don't have a big ego. So no need to apologize or delete your post. I can agree with your impression of klingon warships, but I normally find the Bird of Preys to be the beat up ships in the fleet. When I see the battlecrusiers they seem to be in better repair. Definetly not as well kept as a Federation cruiser but not as bad as a BOP either. I do like the idea of a light wash and maybe some drybrushing to pick up some details too. Once again thanks for the insight.

I so intend to.The detail in this kit demands a bold, custom paint scheme. The first one I did was overall dark green with red and gold thrown in for fun.

Agentg, thanks for taking a look. I can agree that Kronos 1 would be kept clean, even the shots of the interior of the ship was remarkably clean. That being said I can also envision the not so political cruisers with some good wear and tear. Not like you see on the BOPs, but some well used vessels none the less. Did not show it on this vessel, but maybe the next one will have it.

NucMedTec, I think you have a beautiful model and this brings up a good point in considering how a Klingon ship may be painted. The common most thought of is the green and somewhat battered look. The Undiscovered Country showed us something contrary to what is thought of as the norm.

Depending on assigned patrolling areas a battle cruiser may be painted in something resembling its surroundings examples I propose would be for instance reddish brown, yellow, and reddish orange in a nebula of those colors; think of some of the Hubble telescope pictures. If sent to a deep space patrol possibly black and dark charcoal. The different family houses as mentioned could also come to play as not only a ship but a particular squadron. In my opinion Klingons would be more inclined to have their battle cruisers match their surroundings on specific missions (assigned areas), family house colors, or the Imperial Fleet color. Training vessels could very well be a different paint scheme there is nothing saying it can or can’t be this way or that. I think it’s a good looking battle cruiser the way it’s painted you did well. In that Kronos 1 was the big cheeses ship it would be ahem "clean".

Well, not necessarily...  If Klingon culture regarded well-worn or battle-weary cruisers as being more respect-worthy, then probably that's how the leader's ship would look.

Mr Magoo, Excellent hypothosis. I can see how all those elements would come into play and is totally plausible.

Tetsujin brings in another perspective. How does Klingon culture play into the care of their ships? A warlike society, I would think, would hold battle scars in high regard.

I like Star Trek in all its incarnations. Fact is stranger than fiction jut look at the different color combinations on all the United States military aircraft for the past 50 years. It is too bad that Star Trek wasn't able to expand on the other civilizations the Federation delt with; I'm sure some of the things brought up in this conversation wouls have come up. Magoo

I love the model!  Great use of color without being TOO bright.  It looks like a good clean work boat.

To be honest though, I'm not a fan of the base.  I think  you should have gone with some ochres, crimsons, charcoals, that sort of thing, on the planet, to better represent the dark, warlike culture of Klingons.  Not saying they can't visit pretty blue planets, but I think in this case choosing some warm, volcanic tones would help set the mood of the display.  Just a critique, not meaning to tear you down at all.

   Nicely done overall though!  Yes

Mr Magoo, I agree. For me Star Trek was the best sci-fi series we had. Plenty of other good shows but those were the best.

Dirkpitt77, Thanks for looking in. It's okay if you don't like the base, it was the next in line. I had completed two other klingon ships prior to this one, The BOP got a mars-ish planet, the Vor'Cha an ice one and of course this one.

The more I think about it the more I suspect the only clean D-7s were the ones crewed by Romulans.

I can imagine them tearing the ships apart to scrub every square inch and disinfect them to get the Klingon smell out. Whistling
