A Group Build for 2012?
Posted by Thunderbolt379 on Saturday, November 26, 2011 1:14 AM

Hi all,

Just cross-posting from thje figures forum to offer the idea for a 2012 group build -- would anyone be interested in a build specialising in vinyl kits? There's a wide range of possibilities, figures, dinosaurs, SF subjects, the only criterion would be that the kit is made of vinyl. I'm thinking SF figures and dinosaurs, personally...

Cheers, hoping there's some interest!

I have a few kits that would fit that GB.  I'll be watching for the startup in GB's and figure out what my contribution will be til then.

The GB subject matter sounds good - very broad subject choices; something for everyone.

One suggestion I would like to add is to get some tips from the expert vinyl kit builders on how to avoid the dreaded "sticky kit syndrome."  It is well known that enamels are a no-no when painting a vinyl kit, but I have also had problems using Tamiya acrylics and Floquil lacquers.  Both went on OK, but after a few years, the models that these paints were applied to turned sticky.  I have some pet theories, none scientifically based as I slept though most of my chemistry classes, but it seems that heat and humidity may have something to do with the plasticizers leaching out of the vinyl.  Some of my toys (yes, I have toys) have the same problem.

So what's the best way to avoid sticky models?  Is there any primer that prevents it?  Maybe that Fusion spray paint?

Real G -- interesting! Yes indeed, it would be a great forum for sharing that sort of info and I would hope some experts would come aboard. I've not encountered that problem before, I painted some Horizon dinosaurs back in the mid-90s and they were fine the last time I saw them (packed for moving house about five or six years ago and not yet unpacked). I used Tamiya Acrylics and certainly over ten years they seemed to be stable, and that's through Australian summers (which, to be fair, seemed to unbalance the T. rex just a tad...)

Yep, very wide choice of material. There are eBay traders in Thailand selling huge ranges, there's obviously a manufacturer in the Far East who has acquired old moulds from Horizon, Geometric, Screamin', Max Factory and such (Kaiyodo has not shown up yet...) and made them available again at reasonable prices, the repop quality looks excellent (I've collected several so far) so this is a heaven-sent opportunity to acquire subjects that went by long ago.

I hope interest develops and we can field a really interesting GB!

Cheers, Mike/Thunderbolt379
