Photos of My 1/48 Scale POTA Icarus Spaceship
Posted by Phillip1 on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 9:09 PM

Fellow Modelers,

Below are photos of my Monsters-In-Motion 1/48 scale ANSA Icarus Spaceship from the movie “The Planet of the Apes”.  It is about 13” long.  The kit is resin with few pieces, and included the base.  The resin parts were molded very well, but required a lot or work to get them to fit together.  I finally ended up not using the small lower fuselage section, replacing it with two pieces of carefully cut thin, styrene sheet.  There is almost no weathering on the model because I like the “clean” configuration.  Before anyone starts bashing me on the colors, I know I got some of the details wrong.  The anti-glare area around the cockpit windows should be dark olive-green instead of black.  Also, at the end of the gold nosecone there should be small blue and red stripes instead of the black one I used.  I still think the design of the ship is really cool, and hopefully someone will make an injection plastic version one day.  I hope you enjoy the photos.

Thanks

I love the POTA movies, but these ships always looked a little odd to me.  Then again, that was the SF style for the time.

Anyway, great job with that kit! Yes

Very nice work there! I find it hard to do a nice clean job with white but she looks flawless. Great work on the base too.

I've always thought it funny anyone would name a ship 'Icarus' though, since things didn't go that well for him. Think I'd have went with 'Daedalus' myself.

Icarus is a name given by a fan. In the movie they never mention the name of the ship.

The DVD extras list the ship's name as Liberty 1.

And nice job on the build! very clean.

Likewise with regards to the shape of the ship; it was just the nose made of plywood or whatever sticking out of a lake in the desert. It's a plot device that has to look futuristic in order to make the viewer think that we've gained the ability to travel outside of our solar system.

I don't think the ship appears in its entirety until the third movie? When the apes travel to present day Earth.

In one of the movies, I think its "Beneath" the rescue ship that bring Brent to the future is shown, it has landed on the ground but with damage to the engine unit. I found a pic:

This is the only real pic of what was supposedly under the water in POTA

I thought there was a more complete photo of the spaceship on the beach in present day time when the apes returned to Earth in Escape From the Planet of the Apes. I don't recall if they used the sunken ship or the crashed ship above as the vessel used to return.

The original POTA was a classic; I'm not too hot for any of the sequels or remakes.

Everyone,

Thanks for the compliments.  I agree the "full hull" ship would be much larger than what is seen in first three movies, although the production designer never finalized anything because it wasn't required for the script.  I do know the same ship prop was used in all three movies.  I think it was used in the short lived POTA TV series as well.  The full hull ship design has been speculated by fans for decades.

Interestingly the resin model company Fantastic Plastic has just released a 1/72 scale "full hull" Icarus.  You can get it on Ebay (about $125.00).  There is another resin kit company called Crow's Nest which is about to come out with a 1/48 scale Icarus offered in two versions.

I still think the design and shape is really cool even if it was only partially developed.

I think I remember that they used a Gemini capsule as the starting point for the POTA's ship. If that was the case an argument could be made for an orbital module.

Of course the ship suffers from the Irwin Allen syndrome, Nothing fits including the Jupiter 2's landing gear!

I 've seen on a couple of other websites that the Monsters-In-Motion POTA Icarus (like what I posted) is 1/35 scale instead of 1/48 scale.  M-I-M does not give a scale for the kit on their website.  The model is 12" long and I assumed the scale is 1/48 because of the size of the crew seats that were included.  Does anyone have any information concerning the actual scale of this kit.

Thanks
