181st TIE Complete (only took 3yrs!)
Posted by natvtxn on Sunday, July 22, 2012 11:00 PM

Here's my rendition. The only thing I still want to add are the ace or kill marks on the hull. Other than that it's done. I really had a good time with this build. First time ever scratch built anything...i.e. the base and added lots of detail that wasn't in the mold. I also decided to hand paint everything and try varying techniques. It's rough, but that's how I wanted it. I wanted a battle hardened A-10 look with some WWII era battle damage. "Takes a licking and keeps on ticking..."

Here I added some detail to the blast point.

"Carbon scoring" :)

If you really want to waste some time here's the album (if it works)

Yes I have seen those. I may do one someday. I think I'd do it in a very pristine finish.

Very Nice job.

I recently picked up a copy of the Finemolds version of the Interceptor--nice kit. Do you have any suggestions on what scheme to give it? (Since I can't do nearly as well with the 181st scheme that you did).

Please, Keep up the great work.

The Fine Molds kit is nice. I don't have one, but pics of that, along with freeze-framing the movie is where I made notes of all the little details to add to my "blank" AMT kit. For me, considering the price on the FM kit, I would be more apprehensive with getting all crazy. I'd probably keep it simple. Of course that Royal Guard scheme is really cool looking.

It's cool, but i think the imperials would have the resources to repair that damage (unlike the insignificant rebels). i hope the red paint doesn't reduce the effectiveness of the solar panels. the weathering makes it look tough and a survivor. kinda reminds me of Scar (nBSG).

The 181st is a Corellian squadron lead by Baron Soontir Fel (Father of Imperial head of state Jagged Fel in the later Star Wars books)  ( and brother in law of Wedge Antilles). And the red stripes are called Corellian Blood stripes. I believe Fel was the only one to have the stripes on his interceptor. But those stripes definitely deviate from the pain Jane TIE Interceptor.

Excellent work! I've never really seen anyone do a 181st  Imp. Fighter Sq. TIE Interceptor before, nice to see someone else read those great Rogue Squadron comics as well! :)

Nice! The base really makes for a great display.

Actually, while doing some "research" for my TIE Interceptor (which I've posted in this forum), I found that the 181st was originally only one squadron of standard TIE fighters on some backwater world and definently not the best when Fel was assigned to the unit on his second enlistment as a TIE pilot. He improved the squadron, they gained some prestige, then became an elite unit with TIE Interceptors. Later, the 181st was bumped up to an entire wing of three squadrons, designated as (1),(2), and (3) 181st. Every single fighter had the red stripes (which were not Corellian bloodstripes [those were only given to people who earned them in the Corellian armed forces]), and some pilots, when they were transferred, kept the red stripes as a sign of prestige, since they had once served in the best squadron of the Empire.

See the Rogue Squadron Comics for more.

Keep up the great work.
