R2D2
Posted by dmk on Sunday, November 11, 2012 7:58 PM

I just finished the MPC R2D2 kit. Built to represent R2D2 as he appeared in Episode IV "A new Hope"

Critique and comment is welcome. Smile

The build thread is here:

That is outstanding! How was the kit? I've heard it has a few issues.

Thanks TD4438.

Take a look at my build thread (link underneath all the pictures on my first post) for the specifics.  As you'll see though, I did have to make some substantial modifications to correct some inaccuracies. The blue dome panels were incorrect for one, and I had to reshape the bottom of the dome. There were a bunch of other details that I modified. I used a lot of plastic card and scratch building on this one. Though it was easier to do this in 1/6th scale than in the 1/48th scale models I'd been building mostly.  :)

However, it could have been a nice relaxing build if I didn't care about trying to make it more accurate. It is a pretty simple kit out of the box, and the parts actually fit together pretty well.

Remember, this kit was originally released circa 1977 by a model company known for soft plastic and weak detail. The original issue came with vinyl stickers (not waterslide decals) and the ROTJ version included decals.

Your build is beautiful. I remember building the kit way back in 1977 and had most of the original Star Wars kits.

That's right. I remember building the 1st release kit as a kid and remember the stickers. I was surprised to find decals in this box.

As a 13 yr old kid when Star Wars came out, I was too old for the action figures (my 9 yr old brother was big into them), but the model kits were right up my alley. I had most of the original kits, C3P0, R2-D2, Luke's X-Wing, Vader's TIE and Hans' Falcon. I didn't have Darth Vader himself.

When the Empire Strikes Back came out, I was driving and dating and didn't rush out to get the kits because of the lack of funds. I did buy the Snow Speeder and got the Star Destroyer as a Christmas gift. I remember the line increasing to include small scale snap tite play sets, but I passed on those.

Excellent work, DMK!  Have you considered doing the red one?  R5D4, or something like that?  Sorry, my SW nerd badge never arrived in the mail.  If you do it though, put a pop-up panel in the head so your droid can have a bad motivator!

I was twelve when Star Wars came out, and remember the buzz when the first plastic kits hit the hobby shops.  I never picked up R2, C3PO, or Vader, but I think I had most the vehicle kits,.  Star Wars was the single event that pushed me to start thinking about scratchbuilding, as I wanted a Y-Wing really badly.  My first attempt was laughable.  My second was much better, but I still didn't have basic structural concepts mastered.  The nacelles ended up distorting badly, so the model ended up in trash after nearing 90% completion.

Actually I always liked the look of that red R2 unit the Jawas had.   If I can figure out how to do the different shaped head, I might do that one some day.

I tried making a Y-Wing with a pair of engines that came out of a Revell F-16 fighter that was a fairly new kit I built. I also bought a second one for the engine. That was probably the first time I ever bought a kit with the intention of kit bashing it as opposed to building it.

Dave, I'd suggest looking into the R2 Builders Club for info on the R5 head (yeah, I know, Luke called him an R2, silly desert bumpkin that he was) ;)   They build life-sized droids, and I know several have opted for the R5 dome.

Those are good forums for references.  I used info from those guys to help me with my R2.

HI;

Every time I see this little guy I think back to when I had my company .We had a guy in shipping that was (as it turned out ) a real R.C. nerd .He took a dome top trash receptacle (new) and created his own version .

Needless to say , when that showed up in my office with a cuppa coffee in the top hatch , he didn't work in shipping any more .I busted him up to R&D for his skills . Now  , he plays with R.C. planes and I do the static and R.C.boats and ships . Gees , it can be great being retired .  Tankerbuilder   ,   P.S. You did a very nice job , captured the little guy,s essence just right .
