new viper mk 1
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, January 21, 2013 4:49 PM

ok,  I just finished chatting with moebius models.   yes they will release the new viper model, in about 6-8 months.  the molds are in works right now.  there will be landing gear, and the provision to leave them off. it will have a cockpit.  my viper will have both the landing gear and the recon 2 seat cockpit.  this is basically a re do of the revel kit, with added detail.  the pic on cultman is a cad representation of what they want to include.  since this kit will be the same as the old, i am starting to build my front fuselage now and wait for the kit to come out.

I saw this on HLJ's site a few days ago.

They also mention an upcoming kit of the original Galactica coming up in October!

Great news! I'd looked at the aftermarket landing gear but it's been out of production for years and the price was crazy! I've tossed around the idea of scratchbuilding a set but happy to see the new kit, this will make Viper number 4 for me! I guess I can do Apollo, Starbuck, Boomer, and Sheba now- hmmmm guess I need one more for Jolly...

I found the original 1978 boxing of The Last Battlestar years back, I assume it was never reissued? The detail is pretty awful, I picked up an aftermarket kit for it but have been kicking around the idea of lighting her so never built it. Looking forward to seeing the new kit!

I recently found a mm001 viper landing gear set on ebay.  it still costs $50.00.   I was about to start scratch building a set,  because i am a cheap sob,  till I saw the first update on the new viper mk 1.  as of now,  I have installed the duel cockpit in a revell viper fuselage.  cant wait till the new kit comes out

Yeah, fifty bucks for landing gear is just waaaaaayyyyyy out there for me, I might see if I can cast some extra gear using the new kit parts as molds. I don't want to rip Moebius off but I have bought lots of their other stuff and I can't see buying new kits just for the gear when I already have three.

Wasn't the two seat Viper from 1980? I always did wonder though in the pilot where Apollo took his dad down to Caprica in what I assumed was a one-seater. Did he shove Adama into a electronics bay or something!?!

No, the four Battlestar Galactica kits (Base Star, Viper, Galactica, Raider) were reissued in 1998 under the Revell name after the Revell-Monogram merger. The Galactica was the only one from that line I didn't find, but I've seen the 1998 boxing on eBay.

The two capital ships were straight repops, but the fighters were retooled to remove the plastic missile firing ability. Originally, the Viper fired a plastic missile from the nose and the Raider fired two missiles from the underside of each "wing" root. You had to plug the holes yourself with putty or styrene though.

In 2007, the Viper got another retool during that reissue. They added a clear canopy and cockpit instead of the solid plastic canopy that used black decals to look like glass.

Thanks Rob, that's interesting. I picked up all the repops but never saw the Big-G herself- I'd assumed they didn't sell well and she was never reissued.

Here's a link to one of the 1997-98 repops. Because of Monogram's merger with Revell and subsequent brand name change, it is easy to tell by the name on the box. Original 1978 was "Monogram", 1997-98 repop was "Revell-Monogram" and the more recent reissue is just "Revell".

Thanks again Rob, funny I've got three of the baseship re-pops and three re-pop Vipers but I never even saw the re-pop of the Big-G till you posted her here. It too me forever to find one of the Raider re-pops - I wonder if some of the kits were distributed here in greater numbers?

I bet the BSG was just bought up quicker than the Basestar. I imagine the fighters were produced in greater numbers. Sort of like when Star Trek Voyager models first came out, the ship itself vanished off the shelves, but the Kazon ship, torpedo and Maquis ship sat there forever.

This sounds cool.  I just started watching BSG on Netflix and so far I really like it.  I'm getting interested in building some of the Vipers now.
