Enterprise 1701B construction
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, February 21, 2004 10:34 PM
Just thought I drop a pic in the forum of the Secondary Hull and Saucer section light up on the E-B I'm working on.

The lights may appear a bit skewed but that is because the fiber optics are still sticking out and won’t be flushed with the hull until it receives its final paint job. Also the aft science lab and bridge are still in primer and won’t show any windows until the final paint application

The engine assemble will be put on last after it is airbrushed with its final paint. I figured it would be easier considering the Excelsior experience I had. Just to give you an idea of what magical things can be done with a few LEDs.

Also see the web page with the E-B construction for more interesting shots:

I looked at all your photos. They were awesome and quite informative. That is your light source for the engine nacelles? By the way the 1701B is my favorite of the Enterprises. Thanks for showing us your great build! Cool [8D]

I'm going with 2 Blue LED's running at 4.5volts. One in the forward and one in the aft section pointed toward each other. The inside of the nacelle is lined in aluminum tape. The nacelle top is painted Tamyia Transparent Blue on both sides with a coating of dullcoat on the inside of the to smooth out the lighting effect. I'll post the pics for that soon.

For those of you who know the Ertl kit has an inherent pylon droop, my fix was to hold the assembled pylon about 14" above our kitchen (gas) stove and "gently" warm it enough to achieve a level plane. (Disclaimer: Kid's, don't do this at home. )

Just curious... why did you paint both the inside & outside of the clear part? Mostly curious as to the reasoning of painting the outside.

Really Lookin Good Jack. I would never have the patience for that kind of detail. The fiber optics are impressive.

It was a technique I discovered after making the inadvertent mistake of spraying the wrong sides of the Excelsior. It actually turns out looking rather well.

Gotta love "happy accidents"! Big Smile [:D]

How many layers do you lay down on each side?

I believe 3 or 4 on both sides plus a coat of dullcoat on the inside of the cap.

Did you receive the M.O for the Cut-A-Way yet?
