SCI-FI - Scratchbuilt Starfighters group build
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, February 29, 2004 12:52 AM
Hello everyone ,

Well after finishing my kit for the Sci-Fi group build I'm not only proud to have finished by deadline (still trying to post pics) but am also looking to get into another project and have actually found an idea from another member that sounds about perfect .
This idea started with boybuddho's sracthbuilt starfighter and it was suggested that we in the Sci-Fi forum do a group build .
I personally think it's a wonderful idea and is also a way to let our creative juices flowing as it could be just about anything we want with no limitations .

What say all you ? Armor and Aircraft and other groups do quite and bit of grooup builds and we've had one , let's show the others what were all about and blow there socks off .

Let me know what you all think and we can go over specifics as we agree on it .

Bit too early for another Group-build for me, still too many Kits outstanding:
Bimota Tesi 1D
Spiderman Dio
Phantom of the Opera Dio
Hino Super Dolphin & Car Trailer (not a nice kit at all, needs plenty of work)
Atom & Ulan (needs only paint)
1/35 Resin Melusine
SF3D Jerry (legs finished, working on cockpit)
1/12 ED-209 (Resin, VInyl & Metal parts)

Most prolly won't be joining any new group-builds till after the move around July.

I bought an Apartment about 2km from where I am now living.
The Building should be finished May and we should be moving in June.

Bank cleared our loan already and we are just waiting for the move and packing things.
New place will have a permanent corner for my Models and Hobby Desk, one of the reasons why I am looking at a new Compressor too.

Cool deal , that has to be exciting for you and the wife .
May's still 3 month's away and I'm not sure anyone will want to do this build yet but if so then I'm sure since it's a scrath build the time frame should be more than enough for everyone , besides that I know everyone's probably got other projects going , I'm working on ;

1. Slave 1 - curently glueing the kit together
2. Arii 1/100 Valkerye - glueing
3. That annoying Toy Biz Wolverine ( just can't seem to part with it )
4. Fewture Alien Pile - pinning and primer
5. Cut Away Falcon - glued together waiting to primer
6. Bandi Gundam Custom Serpent
7. Bandi Gundam Zaku 2

So I know what you mean about having several projects going at once , Dont you just love this hobby Big Smile [:D] ?

I am all for it. I was going to use my fighter in the Sci-fi build but missed the completion date.

Well does anybody have a specific class of starfighter ? or do we just want to let the creative juices flow on this one as long as it can be classed as a starfighter ? and what kindda of a time frame are we wanting ? remember this will be a sracthbuild project not out of the box .

I vote for anything goes! I'm thinking of a long range escort fighter if the final rules allow. You could limit the fighters crew to one, two, or three perhaps? Will we be allowed to scratchbuild an existing star fighter from a movie or TV show?

Sure I really don't see why not , I was thinking of scrath building something from Star Wars , you know one of the ships you dont see kits for .

Perhaps the E-Wing fighter or something along that line ??? I was also thinking that Since we are building starfighters should we allow bombers as well ? So far only 4 people have said they'd be willing to do it so if it remains this small we can pretty much do whatever ? let me know what you all think .

SeweRat.

When do you want to start the build and for how long?

I looked through some sketches I did and reckon that one of the easier designs might be possible in 1/48 scale, very few parts from the parts box will be used.

BTW, hit a major breakthrough with the Hino Super Dolphin kit yesterday and made great progress towards starting to get it painted. Dropping the engine into the frame tonight.

Right on , I'm glad for you ! Big Smile [:D]
As to when we want to start , I'm not to sure about everyone else but I'm looking up reference pics and doing doodles now , also I went to the HS today and dropped about $75 on styrene and other supplies so I guess when we all agree to an actual start date then we can begin also , I know your going to be moving and myself personally I'm stuck working at nights for an undisclosed amount of time (probably forever) but I think at least 3 months would be plenty of time unless others disagree ??? not really to sure as to what everyone wants to do yet .

Starting now and ending in June sounds fine by me.

What do you guys mean about sketches/ bombers, original designs? Original designs inspired by starfighters. If so, can I do a bomber or gunship that is StarWars inspired, let my "kreative" juices flowing?
Here's a tank I scratchbuilt using scrap and some model kitsCool [8D]Big Smile [:D]I was inspired by the Warhammer 40k tanks.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] What he said !

I'm thinking that any star fighter / bomber / gunship would be ok as long as its scrath built or at least a major kit bash to get the desired effects , also it doesn't have to be inspired by any theme , meaning it doesn't have to be Star Wars or Star Trek , etc . However I want to scrath build something that you don't see from Star Wars , along the lines of the E-Wing fighter of the Howlers something like that , but that's just me . I also don't think it matters as to what scale we all do are projects in as long as detail is seen and you can actually tell its something . I dropped some money at my HS for styrene and other supplies so I'm not even sure as to what scale it'll end up yet , might not even be a scale LOL . As for a june deadline that sounds more than fair and should be long enough as to give everyone to complete other projects while working on this one . Let me know what you think guys .

Thanks Dan, Walt

Walt- thanks for enlightening, now you got me all too excited. I'm thinking I would like to do something like a "heavy" republican gunship or something near that, I did make some concept sketches a bit earlier so I guess I could start some detailed ones right now. Now if we could just get some more members to join in and make this a stickyBig Smile [:D]

I think starting now is too early, don't think that most got their designs or materials together yet.

How about we are doing the prep-work till june and than start the build?

Got a few ideas in mind, but will need to raid the spares box and visit the LHS to see what they got in goodies(Wire meshes, engine nozzles, metal rods, hinges, etc) to help me realise the plan.

I think we should get started in the next week or two so this doesn't wither on the vine. We can start another if this one is a success. Wink [;)]

I might just have to get that kit MMF . I agree with Woody about the start date prep time for the next week or so and then build time , the longer it's prolonged the harder it gets . I have most the supplies I think I'm going to need , of course I'll probably get more stuff as time passes .

Though, i don't have the skills necissary to scratchbuild or even kitbash, you have my support! I like the idea of building fighters from StarWars that you don't see in the movies! One of the X-Tie/Tie-wing uglies might look interesting. Maybe a Z-95 headhunter or a Hapan Battlecruiser (...hang on...it isn't a starfighter...) or a corralskipper! The possibilities are endless! I can't wait to see what you guys will be building! Big Smile [:D]

Anyone of you guys got detailed photos of the republican gunship from StarWars? I've been searching the net for two days now and I haven't seen a thing about this. I've seen the starwars site but theres not much about this gunship. Any help would be great, thanks!
