Wow, I'd never thought to use paper and balsa but the results speak for themselves!

I first built a cardboard 1/2 hull form, than bent 1/16 balsa sticks over each 1/2 rib, then added a layer of diagonal sticks, than another diagonal layer in the other direction, than doubled the thickness of the first diagonal layer, then removed it from the pattern, and made another one.  This forms the mane hull.
