Buck Rogers Starfighter
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, March 1, 2004 3:34 PM
Everyone here probably already knows about this, but I just discovered it today. I found a resin Starfighter kit for $45 at a website called scifimodels.com. It's kind of expensive, but on ebay, the Monogram kits are going for $60 and up (not including shipping). I'm thinking of getting one. Has anyone built one? Anything I should watch for?
Thanks, Scott

Who is the manufacturer of the resin kit? Alliance makes one but its $85 at Federation Models. Make sure what your bidding on isn't a recast.

Hmmm, he got 2 of them up for sale as well as a Colonial Viper.

Mentions that they are based off the Monogram Kits, looks more like he partially assembled them and than cast them up as "NEW" resin kits.

Technically they might not be recasts as the material has changed, but I am pretty sure that they are unlicenced and no fees are going to the licence holder.

Looks like the manufacturer is SciFi Models. I'm still a little leary, but it sure is tempting. I'll bet that you're right about the licensing thing.

I wouldn't go too much by a name on the Box, many Garage-kit companies in Japan got a cool sounding name and in the end it tursn out to be 1 or 2 guys sculpting and casting kits on the weekend.

The most famous 1-man company out here is Studio Half-eye who producd the first Macross Valkyries that could do the FULL transformation without the need for parts swapping. He also only works on the Company after-hours.

Also many of the remakers are well known and hide behind a mask of legitimate company. Examples:
Sol/Elfin/Phantom, HobbyFan, AnimeBox, etc.

Visit most online shops that deal with Resin Kits or simply look at E-Bay and other aution sites and you will see many "Companies" selling recasts and/or unlicenced goods.

In your opinion, should I pass on this? I haven't bought any garage kits before.
Thanks for the advice.

I would. Save your money till you can buy one from a reputable company. Or keep your eye out for a reasonably priced Monogram kit. Smile [:)]

I agree with StevenQ. Wait to get get hold of an original or a better/licenced Resin Kit.

I got a Monogram Kit about 6 months ago where one of the engine halves was missing, assembled the other engine and cast myself 2 new engines in resin.

The Monogram kit can benefit from more detail, better cockpit, etc.

I guess you're right. Sigh:( I'll just keep looking for the Monogram kit on E-bay. Too bad they won't reissue it.
Thanks again, Guys

Don't know about the starfighter, or if it is the same one, but there is a gorgeous hawkship and a Viper here: http://smt.theshoppe.com/category_page.html

A bit pricey, but trust me: They are worth every penny. Detailed interior, landing gear on the hawk, and top notch resin. Otherwise, best of luck to you!

Thanks for the link, Bollod2. Unfortunately, no Starfighter, but I like the Hawkship a lot. I believe it was on the same show as the Starfighter. Hmmm, now if I get a Starfighter AND a Hawkship ( I already have the Marauder), I'd have a great display.
Thanks again,
Scott
