Oh, The Pain!! Another Moebius Chariot Question...
Posted by pittsfieldpete on Thursday, May 14, 2015 2:46 PM
Hello, modelers: I just acquired the "infamous" Moebius 1/24 Chariot with the notorious melted plastic issues. I lucked out in a way; only four of the silver-colored styrene parts have been damaged by the vinyl solvents. Unfortunately they are four of the most visible parts. Going by Moebius' part numbers & names, these are part number 2 (Body Bottom), part number 3 (Chassis), part number 4 (Body Front) & part number 5 (Body Rear). In order of severity from least to worst, the Chassis is only lightly damaged. I think just light sanding alone will clean this part up OK. The Body Bottom is damaged inside & outside, with several crescent, oval & trapezoid-shaped areas of various sizes melted into the plastic. Here I think I can fill & sand without much problem. This part doesn't have much detail anyway, so I believe I can handle it OK. The Body Front & Body Rear both look like a small bulldozer with red-hot tracks drove over them. The entire upper edge of the Body Rear is crimped like my Grandmother's pie crust. About halfway down on the outside there is a damaged area about 1" long between two of the vertical ribs. A portion of two ribs are obliterated. The is also a crescent-shaped damaged area on the inside of this part. The entire width of the Body Front has a melted-in track mark across the area above the headlights. The four molded-in ribs are partly obliterated. Again, filler, sanding & some styrene strip should take care of this part. It could have been far worse. Fortunately no other Silver parts & none of the Clear parts were harmed because Moebius took care to place them in fairly thick individual plastic bags. As you can see, I think I can handle the repairs of the parts that are damaged. But my main worries are, how can I permanently isolate the vinyl parts from the styrene parts when I build the kit so that no further softening & damage will happen to the styrene? Also, every area where the styrene is damaged feels sort of sticky & quite soft. Is it possible there's still a reaction from the vinyl parts still going on, even though the tracks & road wheels have been isolated in a zip lock bag? If so, how do I stop it? I don't want to fix things just to have them melt again. Has anyone else handled the problems with this kit? Are there any aftermarket parts to replace the "hot" vinyl? Please share your ideas with me. Oh, the pain!!

" Auroranut " on this web page:

http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/showthread.php?t=226760

mentions using super glue for isolating the tracks.

Even though the Moebius website states the kit is discontinued

I would still suggest contacting them.

for the residue, i'd wash it in warm soapy water to clean off the plastic. the rest will probably depend if they are salvageable with sanding and putty.

I've been opening kits just after purchase for many years after I discovered an Eduard Bf 108 kit didn't have the clear parts- driving all the way back to the hobby shop was a PITA and I don't wish to do that again.
