Too much fun!  Can't wait to see your 'junkyard dog' finished...

Aside, I too have one of these MPC kits on my 'shelf of doom', awaiting my return to finish the scratchbuilt interior - which may never happen now that I have Bandai's kit.  Perhaps I will take your treatment as inspiration and complete it as one 'blown open' in battle.  Would be a shame to waste all that effort...

Regards, Robert

I managed to score some basement time today and got some work done on this.
A couple of more firsts for me. First time building  tree, first time making tarps and first time making tools. I'm trying the approach I've seen a lot of the armour guys do in the magazine and online, built up and painted as one whole, vs individual painted pieces added on. We'll see how well I can actually execute this Huh?

This shows some rope hanging off the back and some vines up the legs, still need paint and leaves. They are made from solder and wire.

Here are some tarps I made, tissues and woodglue and water.
Also some large rope tied up off the rails.

Next the big tarps, ripped and torn. I'll add rope to it after its dried to tie it down.
Also you can see the beginning of a tree. There is going to be a lot of clay and sculpting going on next.

And lastly a couple of tools I made. The prybar is solder and the shovel is solder and a bit of wire for the handle, soldered on to the end. It took a few tries.

Gamera

I really like how she's coming out, the mud, dirt, foliage on the 'feet' looks the part to me. Some vines would be good, maybe you could stick a bird nest on top or something like that to add to the abandoned look?

HAHAHA!!!! A bird nest!!! That would be funny! Maybe you could add some baking soda over superglue in TINY amounts painted orange in various shades to emulate rust. I take it that's what the brown is supposed to represent? It looks to matte, and not flat enough - the shine on the paint makes it look off. You could also add flat black to areas to appear as blast marks here, and there by dry brushing over larger areas, and along the legs. I know that this is still a work in progress so I won't judge at the moment - just giving you more ideas to work with.

My idea is that it'll be say 70 years after, left in the woods. Much like an old tank. I took inspiration from pictures of tanks and planes found in the woods and jungles.
I was thinking I'd have vines going up it and a tarp over top, like it's been overgrown and left derelict for many many years.
I'm contemplating doing snow as the final touch at the end, like the first decent snow of the fall.

It did turn out a bit darker than I planned but a chunk of it is going to get covered up so I'm not too concerned.

Very cool! I would've painted the AT-ST a lot more gray than brown - more like a white like the ones in Return of the Jedi. The feet look like they're sinking into the ground rather than being simply a little dirty. I would redo them accordingly, but it's your build so enjoy!

I put a bit of a base coat down in earth tones. mixtures of brown, brown/black, green/black, green/brown randomly about the base and some lighter greens on the top of the sawdust&glue on top of things for foliage/mosses. I also added in an initial black wash for all the nooks and crannies to try and give a bit of depth and shaddow.
I made the paint very wet, not quite a wash but close and the sawdust soaks it right up nicely. My first time using sawdust and on a whim and I quite like it.
All the ground paint is dollar store craft acrylic paint thinned with water and a bit of alcohol.

Just an initial start at some colour. Next up, making the foam and cubes look like rock and adding foliage and possibly some trees and vines.

Gorgio's head or at least his hair would look good on an Ewok Wink

Or maybe a carving on one of the stone blocks, since they always seem to be talking about those carvings on the series....

HAHA!! What a little cutie! She looks a lot like my niece. I'm glad to see that she's so happy to make something with her own hands, and not playing a video game. I love the base, it looks like what it represents - the desert. The shape, and colour and other acoutriments make this very cool! It's just too bad that this isn't bigger/taller.

Lol, nice to see you've drafted some help there. Maybe I should see if I can get my nephews to help me with groundwork!

Looking cool so far, I really like the building ruins. Reminds me of something off the Ancient Aliens TV show:

Well despite some delays and setbacks and frustration over how I was going to do this I've finally gotten around to finishing this off.
The base, wood blocks, dowels and foam ball are all dollar store finds. Sawdust is from my chopsaw catch bag and the rest is regular carpenters glue.
I had a little help from my little monkey, her first work on any model and she loved it. I think I have her hooked early :)
Just have to wait for it to cure and dry and then sealing and painting, etc, etc...

Pictures were off my cell phone so the quality isn't that great but you should get the idea.

For being so long and missing so many bits you are making it looks outstanding.

Despite the problems it's good to see you're still working on this. The rust looks really cool.

Here is an update on my AT-ST build. I've dug out the airbrush sets and really gave it a go, relearning how to use my single action and teaching myself how to use a double action. I'm pretty pleased with the result, considering it's my first time weathering with an airbrush and the first pass of it. There are a few spots where I got some 'sputter' and blotches due to not having the paint thinned and pressure set properly. Constant learning process. Plenty more touch ups and detail to go.
Next up after the weathering, mounting to a base, re-attching the blast visors that I accidentally knocked off and to begin covering in overgrowth.
(let me know if the picts don't show, first post with picts since the site update)

I'm still not seeing the pics. If you can see them, it may be because you are signed in at Dropbox. They aren't showing up for me, whether I'm signed in or not. Am I the only one who can't see them?

Thanks for the info, I probably should have waited to post it instead of doing it late at night. I found my two problems. Posting from my phone and if you are using Dropbox, click on the details and view original image and copy that link.

Cheers :)

Images didn't work. :-(

You can use the "Preview" feature to see if your images show up before you post. You can also play around in the testing forum. Search the technical assistance forum for how to post images.

It may be a problem with Dropbox. I can't seem to get the images inserted from Dropbox, I'm not sure why.

AT-ST after 15 years
Posted by qlabs on Saturday, May 23, 2015 11:24 PM

So it's been about 15 years since I've built in plastic and while sorting the basement I found a half finished kit my sister gave me back in 1999-2000. I've picked up a few kits here and there and a few more this year at a hobby show and have been putting off building them.

This half finished AT-ST walker seems like the perfect way to get back in the swing of things.

Upon opening the box I found no instructions and a bunch of missing parts so I've decided to make this one battle hardened and left derelict. The plan is to mount it on a base, add rust, moss, vines, etc...

I'll post more pictures as I get more done.

Hopefully these images work or the links do.

Colin

UPDATE: Note, don't try and post and post images from your phone, doesn't work so well. On a PC, much better.

Some additional info, bit's of scrap styrene, some solder for hoses/lines on the missing gun and some old LED's from my electronics parts bin, sanded flat on one side and glued on the back for antenna equipment.
I used a no.11 knife and a pin vise with a small bit to make the blaster damage. A little more to do on the 'cab' around the missing gun and it'll be ready for some more paint.
